What's the story behind 'Genshin Impact'

Since September, players have had access to its first public beta. In days, this free-to-play and miHoYo game is gaining popularity exponentially until analyst Daniel Ahmad predicts it will exceed $100 million in revenue. Twitch streams have multiplied, guides with tricks (mastering its secrets is harder than playing ‘Among Us’ or ‘Fall Guys’) are growing like mushrooms… but what does ‘Genshin Impact’ have to be the best Chinese IP launch ever?

We call ‘Genshin Impact‘ a free-to-play game that combines exploration, real-time action, and RPG elements. The game, available on PC, mobile, Switch, and Playstation 4, features an open world where battles take place with all the genre’s conventions: spells, characters that combine their powers, and the ability to buy weapons, spells, and objects.

The open world lets you overcome many obstacles and combine four characters, starting with two twins separated in Teyvat by an angry deity. As you play, you’ll unlock 24 characters who control seven natural elements—ice, fire, water, air, electricity, earth, and life in this fantasy world. They empower and nourish each other.

It’s mostly a copy of ‘Zelda: Breath of the Wild’, the 2017 Switch game. It is one of the game’s most criticised aspects, but ‘Genshin Impact’ has overcome this controversy and become famous. Nintendo didn’t invent cooking, enemy camps to raid, the stamina meter, or towers to quickly travel across the map in ‘Tales…’.

The similarities, tone, and pace of ‘Breath of the Wild’ and ‘Genshin Impact’ may seem suspicious at first, but as you explore the latter, the elements become clearer. Combat is the game’s most praised feature. This uses the usual attack combos and quick dodges.

Because manipulated elements become important as the adventure progresses, each character is unique. Ice turns into water, fire burns wooden obstacles, and the elements combine in combat and exploration to create steam clouds and electrified water. However, each issue requires unique solutions.

‘Genshin Impact’ is addictive because it’s unpredictable. Using elements to solve puzzles or kill enemies lets you improvise, making a free-to-play game that sometimes feels like a sandbox. However, there is a catch. The levelling system is the catch: the game’s varied and frenetic combats have been praised, but its money-taking system has disappointed.

The gacha hook
The game’s “world level” limits the player’s level, missions, and other aspects, preventing ‘Genshin Impact’ from being a sandbox. While your “world level” increases and allows more actions, you must accept missions and travel the world to level up. Sometimes gradually.

There’s a trick behind this mechanic. ‘Genshin Impact’ is a gacha, a free-to-play subgenre that gives players improvements through machines that randomly distribute prizes, like loot boxes. These machines use real money and have taken over the Chinese and Korean mobile markets. Genshin Impact was one of the first massive games to popularise the mechanic in the West.

The gacha mechanics in ‘Genshin Impact’ are not intrusive and only become more pronounced at the end, which may explain its popularity and moderate good reputation among traditional players. You can advance through the story without spending if you’re patient and assume certain repetitive mechanics are inevitable. For the already difficult final stretch and to get all characters (three are only available on machines), you must make large microtransactions.
