Heatwave warnings hit over 150 million Americans on Monday.
Utah parks are experiencing a heatwave, killing three hikers in recent days. Local authorities said that a 52-year-old American and his 23-year-old daughter perished at Canyonlands National Park on July 12. They said the two hikers “had become lost and had run out of water” at “above” 37.8 °C. Emergency personnel found “both people were already dead”. Police also found a 30-year-old woman dead at Snow Canyon Park on Saturday, highlighting dehydration hazards.
The deaths occur while the US is experiencing an extraordinary heat wave that has ravaged the west for a week and is now moving east. Over 150 million Americans were still under heatwave warnings on Monday. The heat may have caused several deaths, including a motorcyclist in Death Valley, California, on July 6.
Dozens of places nationwide have set absolute and seasonal records since the month began. On July 7, Las Vegas achieved its highest temperature ever at 48.9 °C.
Scientists think repeated heatwaves indicate global warming caused by fossil fuel consumption. American heat follows the hottest June on record, according to the European Copernicus Observatory.
Salt Lake City (AP)— Utah state and national parks reported three heat-related deaths over the weekend, including a father and daughter who got lost on a hard climb in Canyonlands National Park in triple-digit temperatures.
The daughter, 23, and her father, 52, texted 911 that they were lost and out of water while hiking the 8.1-mile (13-kilometer) Syncline Loop, the National Park Service’s most difficult trail in the Island in the Sky district of the southeast Utah park. In 100-degree weather, the two hiked steep slopes and boulder fields with few route signs on Friday.
Park rangers and a BLM helicopter team searched for the hikers Friday evening but found them dead. On Monday, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office recognized them as Albino Herrera Espinoza and his daughter Beatriz of Green Bay, Wisconsin.
According to the sheriff’s office, safety officials used a helicopter to transfer the dead from the park to the state medical examiner on Saturday morning due to the rugged terrain. Heat-related deaths are being examined by the local sheriff and NPS.
Later Saturday, southwest Utah first responders received a call about two hikers “suffering from a heat related incident” at Snow Canyon State Park, noted for its lava tubes, sand dunes, and red and white Navajo Sandstone canyon.
A multi-agency search team found and treated two heat-exhausted hikers. They were treating those people when a hiker reported an unconscious person nearby. Public safety officials say first responders found the 30-year-old woman deceased.
Her death is being investigation by Santa Clara-Ivins Public Safety. Her identity is unknown.
Even though officials warn that trekking in excessive temperatures is dangerous, tourists continue to visit Utah and other southwestern parks during the hottest months.
Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona has killed three hikers in the previous month due to summer temperatures that sometimes approach 120 degrees Fahrenheit on exposed routes. A 50-year-old Texas man died on July 7 trying to climb the South Rim. Weeks before, a 69-year-old man fell and died while hiking in the heat, and a 41-year-old who spent the night at the canyon bottom was found dead beside his campsite. Summertime Grand Canyon temperatures can reach triple digits.
A motorcyclist died at Death Valley National Park in eastern California earlier this month, and another was hospitalized for heat fever. The group rode through Badwater Basin in sweltering weather.
The National Park Service said Monday that Death Valley saw its longest sequence of air temperatures exceeding 125 degrees Fahrenheit (52 degrees Celsius) since the early 1900s for nine days July 4-12. A rainstorm caused a multiday power outage in areas of the park as temperatures hover close around 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
In eastern Washington state, a 61-year-old man was found dead in his motor home on Monday. Franklin County Coroner Curtis McGary said the guy likely died Wednesday when the temperature reached 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42 degrees Celsius).
Heat was suspected in the death of an 81-year-old Oregon man Saturday, but authorities have not disclosed details. Since July 4, 17 people have died from suspected heat-related causes in Oregon, according to The Oregonian/Oregonlive.com.
