Ukraine: Milwaukee Republican convention bad news

James David Vance’s selection as Donald Trump’s running mate in the US presidential race sends a clear message to the Ukrainian government. He has said a lot of casual or disrespectful things about a nation that Vladimir Putin has forced it to fight an existential war.

A year after Kiev’s counteroffensive, which failed and forced Russia’s troops into the defensive, the country is still gradually encroaching on eastern Ukraine. Not from the front, where Moscow has failed to establish a buffer zone around Kharkiv to stop Ukrainian shooting on its own territory, is the most concerning news for Ukraine. It originates from the United States Republican National Convention, which is taking place in Milwaukee, the major state of Wisconsin.

James David Vance is a young senator from Ohio, and on July 15, Donald Trump made a clear statement to the Ukrainian authorities by selecting him as his running mate. A rising star of the wildest Trumpism, the latter has made a number of casual or derisive remarks about a nation fighting an existential battle that is being directed by Vladimir Putin, the lord of the Kremlin.

Before the Russian invasion started in February 2022, he declared, “I have to be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or the other.” He has stayed true to that path despite feeding suspicions about significant American aid diversion—many of which have been refuted. After being elected to the Senate, J. D. Vance argued against the payment of a fresh round of significant military aid, claiming that the US lacked the resources needed for Kiev to win and calling the Ukrainian objective of regaining the lost territory over the previous ten years “fanciful.”

It goes without saying that the president, not his right-hand man, would decide on foreign policy in a potential Trump administration. Still, though. Although the first vice president of the businessman, Mike Pence, sometimes expressed diplomacy loyal to the principles upheld by the Grand Old Party before to its submission to Trumpism, his prospective replacement will encourage an isolationist impulse.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, may have been motivated by events in the US to bring up the prospect of unconditional talks with Moscow for the first time at a fresh peace summit scheduled to take place prior to the US presidential election. The cautious way that Russia has reacted to the proposal highlights how hopeless the diplomatic landscape currently is.

The need of European backing for Kiev is underscored by these menacing clouds, a point that J. D. Vance either ignores entirely or brings up in a patronizing manner. In this regard, we have to applaud the European Parliament’s disavowal of the diplomatic lone rider, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, at the start of its new session by a very substantial majority. The latter, who has been in charge of the rotating presidency of the EU since July 1, threw himself into a “peace mission” in the early days of his mandate, one that Moscow, with whom he is close, found highly agreeable.

The prospect of a dramatic reexamination of all that has supported the transatlantic alliance over the past few decades should unbridled Trumpism return to the White House compels Europeans to band together even more.
