“Nothing should stop us from saving our democracy, and that includes personal ambition.” On Wednesday, July 24, Joe Biden gave a highly anticipated and solemn broadcast address explaining why he had to drop out of running for president three days earlier, allowing his vice-president, Kamala Harris, to challenge Republican Donald Trump in November.

“This is the best way to unite our nation,” he declared in this 10-minute speech carried live on major American television channels.

Wednesday, Joe Biden spoke to the nation about his historic decision to withdraw from the presidential campaign and the need to start a new chapter in America’s story.

In my opinion, my record as president, my global leadership, and my vision for America’s future all deserve a second term, but nothing can stop our democracy. That includes personal ambition, Biden stated the Oval Office.

I think passing the torch to a new generation is preferable. This is the finest approach to unite America. Long years of public service have their place. New, fresh, younger voices have their place. Now is that moment and place.”

The speech came three days after Biden shocked the nation by announcing he would quit his presidential campaign less than four months before election day. Biden committed to improve Americans’ lives as he concluded his first and only tenure as president, reflecting on his five decades in public service. On Wednesday, the president rebuffed Republican calls for Biden to retire rather than finish his term.

He remarked, “Over the next six months, I’ll be focused on doing my job as president.” That means I’ll keep lowering prices for hard-working families and growing our economy. I’ll preserve our civil and personal freedoms, from voting to choosing.”

Biden pledged to “keep working to end the war in Gaza, bring home all the hostages and bring peace and security to the Middle East”. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, called for “total victory” in the war in a rare joint session of Congress hours before Biden’s speech.

One of Biden’s finest achievements was his foreign policy leadership, notably his support for Ukraine in its struggle against Russia. He reminded people of his climate, gun, and healthcare bills. Biden recalled his inauguration in 2021, weeks after the January 6 Capitol attack and less than a year into the coronavirus pandemic, and marveled at how far the country had come.

After dropping out on Sunday, Biden endorsed his vice-president Kamala Harris, who has enough delegates to win the Democratic primary next month. In his remarks, Biden praised Harris and stressed the vast November election choices.

“I’d like to thank our great vice-president, Kamala Harris,” Biden added. “She’s tough, capable, and experienced. She’s been a great partner and national leader. The American people must decide.”

Before Biden’s declaration on Sunday, over 30 Democratic members of Congress had urged for the president to drop out after his terrible debate performance last month. Polls suggested more Democrats thought Biden should step aside as Donald Trump’s small advantage grew in the days leading up to the announcement.

Trump and Harris are tied in early polling since Sunday, but the vice-president is ahead of Biden. Despite polls showing a close race, Biden said Americans would pick democracy come November. Biden made the classic case for American exceptionalism, citing the Declaration of Independence and Benjamin Franklin.

“America is a concept stronger than any army, ocean, ruler, or tyrant. Biden called it the world’s most powerful concept. Our belief is that these realities are self-evident. Our creator gave us life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We’ve never entirely lived up to this hallowed principle, but we’ve never walked away from it, and I don’t think the American people will now.”

Biden’s 2020 campaign tagline called the fight against Trump a “battle for the soul of the nation”. Biden said the battle is ongoing and the American people will decide its outcome.

Kingship and dictatorship are absent in America, which is fantastic. The people do, Biden said. “You hold history. Control is yours. The concept of America is yours. You must keep faith and remember who we are.”

Obama praised Biden after he spoke. “The truth, the sacred cause of this country, is larger than any one of us,” Obama said on X, “Joe Biden has stayed true to these words again and again over a lifetime of service to the American people.” Obama has not endorsed Kamala Harris for Democratic candidacy.

Nancy Pelosi, House speaker emerita, said Biden has demonstrated he is on the right side of history and the future. Her statement after Biden’s Oval Office address named him “one of America’s most consequential presidents”.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer termed Biden’s withdrawal “a great act of patriotism for this country you love so much”.
