Kamala Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, describes himself as a “voice of working people” or a “extremist leftist.”
The governor of Minnesota was a soldier before becoming a teacher, a fact that is hardly known to the public. He wants to take on Donald Trump and his “bizarre” beliefs alongside Kamala Harris.
It’s okay if you’ve never heard of Tim Walz. The majority of Americans, seven out of ten, are unaware enough about Kamala Harris’s running mate to form an opinion about him. Additionally, the governor of Minnesota, whom Bernie Sanders has praised and Barack Obama has referred to as “the voice of working people,” enjoys an image as a “normal candidate” who is close to the middle class and rural America from which he hails. This is despite the fact that Donald Trump’s campaign is officially looking forward to taking on “a dangerous leftist extremist.” His odd resume is adorned with his service as an elected official, a teacher, and first as a soldier in the National Guard.
“Donald Trump is a volatile, polarizing individual. He doesn’t know what a service is. Alongside Kamala Harris, Walz stated at their inaugural campaign rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, “He’s too busy serving his own interests to have time for it.”
JD Vance is also criticized: “Like every ordinary person I grew up with [in the heartland], he attended Yale and was financially supported by billionaires in Silicon Valley for his professional endeavors,” remarks Walz. “If he gets off his couch,” he says, he’s looking forward to challenging Donald Trump’s running mate. An allusion to a fictitious story about Vance’s autobiography, Hillbilly Elegy, which went popular on the internet and prompted the AP to remove the fact-check and say, “No, JD Vance did not have sex with a couch.”
Tim Walz, the man behind the internet tirades labeling Donald Trump and JD Vance as “weird people,” wants to “bring some joy” back into this presidential race.
politics, education, and the army
Similar to the manipulated recording of Kamala Harris pleading with him to be her “running mate,” Tim Walz, sixty, is frequently seen wearing sneakers and a T-shirt, with a “camouflage” cap covering his thinning hair. It goes beyond simple style.
He joined the National Guard at the age of 17, and throughout the course of his two decades of service, he rose to the rank of sergeant major, serving first in his home state of Nebraska and later in Minnesota, the home state of his spouse. In addition, he was a geography teacher at the 40,000-person Mankato High School, which is located 75 miles south of Minneapolis. Students chose him as the “Most Inspiring Teacher” in 2003. He also assisted in leading his high school football team to a Minnesota championship title as an assistant coach. Then, after being involved in John Kerry’s campaign, he made the decision to go into politics.
Presumably a left-wing strategy
Similar to Walter Mondale, the vice president of Jimmy Carter, Tim Walz is a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Worker Party. Despite his left-wing stance, he managed to earn a seat in the US House of Representatives in 2006, representing a normally Republican rural area. Both his centrist and progressive colleagues in the House valued him. He developed relationships with prominent party figures in the course of a decade, most notably Nancy Pelosi, who reportedly encouraged Kamala Harris to select him (Polico).
When he delayed calling in the National Guard during the rioting that followed George Floyd’s death in May 2020, he faced criticism. This is currently being exploited by Donald Trump’s supporters. He was elected governor of Minnesota in 2018. Two years later, Tim Walz was easily re-elected despite this.
During his time as governor, he utilized a budget surplus to give all kids free school lunches. In addition to legalizing marijuana for recreational use and signing a bill protecting abortion rights after the Supreme Court overturned his decision, he was a big champion of labor rights and LGBTQ rights. Is he too “left-wing” to run for president? Recently, Jake Tapper, a CNN reporter, questioned him. In response, Tapper said, “What a monster! Women make their own health care decisions, and children have full bellies to learn. I’m glad to have that designation. After refocusing, the National Rifle Association-praised hunter now supports stronger gun control.
Walz shares Kamala Harris’ views on the Middle East: he has voted in favor of every House pro-Israel resolution and acknowledges Israel’s right to defend itself against “Hamas terrorists,” but he has also condemned the “intolerable” circumstances in Gaza. Unlike the Pennsylvania governor who was initially expected to be Harris’s choice—Josh Shapiro is Jewish and has been the victim of an anti-Semitic campaign by the far-left in America—he has adopted a more accommodative stance toward pro-Palestine students.
Harris’s decision to support Walz is probably an attempt to strengthen the “blue wall” of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, which is Minnesota’s neighbor and collapsed in 2016, ensuring Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton by a few tens of thousands of votes. Thus yet, there is no indication that Tim Walz can counter Trump’s advances among white working-class voters with low levels of education. “Running mates have a relatively small impact [on an election],” claims Doug Heyes, a former Republican Party spokesperson. “Too often, both parties use terms like ‘radical’ and ‘dangerous.'” Money is raised and the base is energized by it, but swing votes are not.
