A forgotten film that needs immediate restoration

It entered Spanish cinemas in 2022 but went unnoticed. It’s “Onoda, 10,000 nights in the jungle,” a crude Japanese war drama that only grossed 1,408 euros in our theaters. A financial disaster, but vindicated over time. It has a 97% Rotten Tomatoes rating after 35 positive reviews.

Though seen at Cannes, it made only $262,276 globally. Filmin brings us this film that is not suitable for our fast-paced culture: it lasts almost three hours and focuses on the devastating human effects of war conflicts rather than action scenes with commandos in the jungle.

Japan is losing the war at the end of 1944. A young Japanese soldier is sent to a Philippine island before the American landing to prevent it with his comrades. When they hear the war is over, he thinks the Allies are tricking them and stays in the jungle for 10,000 more nights.

The screenwriter of ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ co-wrote this slow, reflective story that reinforces the protagonist’s determination. Amazingly, the story is true (a Japanese intelligence officer spent 29 years in the Philippines before being relieved by a former army colleague) and inspired Werner Herzog’s novel ‘Twilight of the World’. The army’s blind obedience and how military discipline radicalizes our behavior until all logic is gone.

Netflix adds Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Horizon: An American Saga” and “The Watchers.” These films follow their theatrical and digital releases.

Kevin Costner’s Western drama Horizon: An American Saga covers 15 years of pre- and post-Civil War American history. Late June theater release, mid-July PVOD release, and August 2024 Max streaming release. Its horror-humanity mix garnered praise despite mixed reviews. In June 2024, the film opened theatrically, followed by PVOD and Max in August.

Netflix has more Warner Bros. titles. They include “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Furiosa,” “Godzilla vs. Kong,” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.” Netflix uses these movies to boost viewership during the holidays. The platform will host all films until March 2025.
