This Netflix superhero series beat 'The Boys'

‘Supacell’ replaces Amazon’s ultraviolent satire with a dramatic London setting.

In its third and fourth seasons, “The Boys” turned from a progressive message to a brutal anti-Trump analogy, making Patriot fans feel ridiculous. A tantrum led to a review bombing that knocked the show off Rotten Tomatoes. Another superhero show topped the ratings with a new 100% score, but its racialized cast made the Crystal generation nervous, who slammed it again.

While its 100% critical acclaim is impressive, ‘Supacell’ (which you can watch on Netflix) is a great superhero series on its own merits, and the audience recognized this, sending it to number 1 in the most watched shows globally when it premiered in July, dethroning ‘The Bridgertons’ and staying in the Top 10 for six weeks. A second season was announced in August for this success.

Unlike ‘The Boys’, the tone is more dramatic, focusing on black Londoners’ social issues. Five seemingly normal people in the south of the city develop extraordinary powers in ‘Supacell’. Except for being black and having anemia, they seem unrelated.

The six-episode series is not a spectacular urban action adventure, but rather a shadowy organization tracks these characters as they discover powers like super speed and mind-moving objects. It’s reminiscent of ‘Misfits’, a brilliant British proposal from a few years ago, where a group of unexpected characters also got powers, but here the focus is on social commentary due to the cast’s obvious racial connection. The series is unique and a must-see for superhero fans.

The fourth season of Prime Video’s longest-running and highest-rated series, ‘The Boys‘, is here. At a time when superhero fictions are becoming infallible and wearying viewers, this satire remains one of the platform’s biggest draws. Secret: superheroes are minor.

At the top. ‘The Boys’ is a popular and acclaimed series. It still has a 91% Rotten Tomatoes rating, but its third season’s criticism of Trump’s presidency earned it enemies and negative votes (many fans threw their hands up in horror when they discovered Patriot… was the villain!), which pushed the spin-offs Generation V or Diabolical to the top. Platform icons like ‘Fleabag’, ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’, ‘Invincible’, and ‘Undone’ have perfect scores or close to them.

The superhero key. ‘The Boys’ is based on a comic book by Garth Ennis (‘The Punisher‘, ‘Preacher’) in which the superheroes, a Justice League lookalike, are part of a private corporation that finances them and forces them to appear in movies, reality shows, and promotions (besides saving the world when necessary). Rebels who know that superheroic happiness hides villainy are ready to expose their suffering.

The formula. Like the comic, ‘The Boys’ is a simple satire of superheroes’ ridiculousness: if superhumans existed, we’d see heroics, but also misbehavior, excesses, and power abuse. After getting tired of ultraviolence and toilet humor (both great), the series turned Patriot into a tragic villain, like a spoiled child who thinks people are inferior and has terrifyingly real political ambitions. His similarities to the Trump administration—from the public image to the lack of moral philosophy beneath the surface—are evident in a series nobody bet would become one of the best political satires of recent years.

Bad times for superheroes. The odd thing is that ‘The Boys‘ succeeds when audiovisual superheroes are at their worst. Daily news casts doubt on the subgenre’s future (today, without further ado: ‘Blade has just lost its director… for the second time), and the two great powers are at odds this year. DC will restructure its universe and Marvel will release more powerful titles like ‘Fantastic Four’ in 2025. But the times of’Avengers: Endgame’ seem to be gone, as they’ve acknowledged market saturation.
