The recent big box office failures share

Lionsgate had a terrible year with Borderlands and The Crow.

It was once the “third major” after Disney and Warner. Lionsgate’s ‘Saw’, ‘The Hunger Games’, ‘John Wick’, ‘Red’, ‘Terminator’, and ‘Twilight’ franchises were Hollywood blockbusters. Despite gaining power in recent years, a string of box office failures threatened its stability.

Not just Joker. Joker: Folie à Deux is a hot topic, but Warner has also released hits like ‘Beetlechus Beetlechus’, ‘Twisters’, and ‘Dune: Part Two’. Lionsgate continues chaining failures. Borderlands, ‘The Crow’, ‘Megalopolis’, ‘The Killer’s Game’, ‘Never Let Go’, and ‘White Wings’ have all failed at the box office. No one has grossed over $50 million.

White Bird Apocalypse. The most successful case has been ‘White Wings’, the sequel (and prequel) to 2017’s ‘Wonder’, which told the story of a child with a facial deformity and grossed 315 million dollars. Only 1.58 million dollars remain in this installment. Its $20 million budget was modest, but it was the latest box office failure.

First, the biggest. The first of this long list of failures was ‘Borderlands’, which bombed this summer and was the most media-driven until ‘Joker 2’. Only 30.9 million in earnings barely covered promotional costs, so 115 million was clearly unaffordable. This put it below films like Madame Web and Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1.

Not everything’s bad. Not all of these films are Lionsgate productions. Co-productions, financing, and pre-sales abroad are examples. Gearbox and 2K co-produced ‘Borderlands‘. Lionsgate only paid for US distribution rights for ‘Megalopolis’, while Coppola paid for marketing.

Poor news despite everything. Lionsgate had a bad year overall. ‘The Crow’ was one of the summer’s most anticipated films and barely made half its $50 million budget. Lionsgate’s third-quarter 2024 financial report is still pending, but the second quarter showed $44.4 million in losses, more than double the previous year.

Future uncertainty: ‘Ballerina’. Lionsgate is in its worst form when even ‘Ballerina‘, a spin-off of a saga that had been unbeatable, is questioned. Originally scheduled for June, it was delayed a year. The official reason is that Chad Stahelski, director of the four main series films, had to return to refine the action sequences.

The Wrap reports that Stahelski nearly reshot the film after Lionsgate rejected Len Wiseman’s cut. The reshoots of ‘Borderlands’ because Eli Roth’s original cut didn’t convince the producer multiplied the budget and delayed the release by several months will resonate ominously at Lionsgate. Tim Miller, the director of ‘Deadpool’, created the new version.

Hidden cards. Many of Lionsgate’s most valuable franchises are still alive. ‘Saw’ and ‘The Hunger Games‘ have done well, so new episodes will be released. Lionsgate hopes Stahelski can revive ‘Highlander’ with his work. They also hope ‘Good Fortune’ (Keanu Reeves’ return to comedy) or ‘Freaky Tales’ (Pedro Pascal) will launch new brands.
