The Dog Will Star in James Gunn's 'Superman'

James Gunn announced that Superman’s super-pet Krypto, named after Krypton, will be cast in next summer’s big-budget “Superman” film, formerly “Superman: Legacy.” Comic book fans will be thrilled. The film is being produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures, owned by Warner Bros. Discovery like CNN.

On X-rated Tuesday, the director posted photos of Superman with a dog and Gunn with his own dog.

Gunn said the film’s furry, four-legged character was inspired by his dog Ozu, whom he adopted shortly after writing the “Superman” script.

“Ozu, who came from a backyard hoarding situation with 60 other dogs and had never met humans, was problematic to say the least,” Gunn wrote on social media. He entered and destroyed our home, shoes, furniture, and laptop. It took a while for him to let us touch him.”

He wondered, “How difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” which let Krypto into the script. He said Krypto “changed the shape of the story while Ozu was changing my life.”

Gunn noted that her post coincided with October’s Adopt a Shelter Dog month.

In “Superman,” “Pearl” actor David Corenswet will play Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult plays Lex Luthor. The 2025 film “Superman” opens July 11, 2025.
