The Academy Awards are a major headache for Netflix.

The most significant change is the theatrical exhibition having a minimum of seven days in ten of the fifty markets in the United States.

Several modifications to the rules that will govern the 97th Academy Awards, which will take place the following year, have been disclosed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. There are some of them that go back to the rules that existed before COVID, which were required in order to qualify for the most essential categories. Concerns? Certainly, if you are a production company like Netflix or an independent production company, you are impacted by something.

For instance, in order for a production to be eligible for the categories of Best Film, Animated Film, International Film, Soundtrack, and Screenplay, the following criteria must be met:

Release in theaters for a minimum of seven days, either consecutively or non-consecutively, in ten of the top fifty markets in the United States, no later than forty-five days following the first release in the year 2024.
It is required that distributors submit their release plans to the Academy for verification in the case of films that are scheduled to be released at the end of the year with extensions after January 10, 2025.
Two of the ten markets are considered to be territories that are not the United States.

All of the top 15 overseas markets, in addition to the film’s native region, are considered to be eligible non-US markets. Under the condition that the qualifying requirements for both categories are satisfied, animated feature films that have been submitted in the International Feature Film category are eligible to be considered for the General Animated Feature Film category. In order to be eligible for submission in the Screenplay categories, a final shooting screenplay will now be required.

It is very evident that the purpose of these regulations is to invigorate the film exhibition industry, which has experienced a decline in recent years, and to take some of the power away from Netflix and other streaming services. After a just testimonial journey through theaters, they market their films on their own platforms, despite the fact that they compete with their pictures for the Academy Awards and the media burden that would ensue from such competition.

In point of fact, one of the new regulations is that drive-in theaters will no longer be recognized as a qualifying location for the Academy Awards. This was a policy that was briefly brought into effect in the year 2020, when indoor movie theaters were closed due to the epidemic. That year, the Academy also permitted films that were exhibited on streaming and video-on-demand services to be eligible for awards; however, the potential of this happening in the future has been completely abolished.

This conflict has also resulted in the death of an additional victim: independent films. For many years, it has been challenging for these films to be released in conventional theaters due to the fact that blockbuster pictures have almost completely filled all of the theaters. Because of this, the Academy prizes are once again prizes that are given by and for the industry. The outsiders will need to reconsider the several other advancement avenues available to them.

Netflix’s present strategy will suffer as a result of a new rule established for the Academy Awards. Over the course of the previous few years, the Academy Awards, also referred to as the Oscars, have implemented a number of modifications that have an impact on the methods by which films are evaluated for eligibility. Over the course of several years, Netflix has made use of this guideline pertaining to its releases. Among the most recent examples is the film All Quiet on the Western Front, which did not find widespread distribution in the United States until after it had been nominated for an Academy Award. A limited distribution was also given to The Power of the Dog in 2021, and it is highly likely that it did not meet the requirements of the new rule that a picture must be released in ten of the top fifty markets in the United States.

As a result of the new Academy regulation, Netflix will be required to adjust its methods in preparation for the Oscars event that will take place the following year. In the effort to level the playing field and rekindle interest in the cinema, this verdict will be a victory for distributors who do not take advantage of streaming services. It is possible that Netflix will have fewer nominees for the Best Picture award, at least momentarily, because the streaming service is unable to take up as much room with titles that are primarily available for streaming. With any luck, this modification will be beneficial and will compel streaming services to pay a higher price for more substantial theatrical releases.
