Half of PS users turn it off after playing.

Not all gamers use one of recent consoles’ coolest features.

After playing, you turn off the console. In the past, consoles, like PCs, allowed you to suspend your session by storing the exact point where you stopped the game so you could resume it later. Sony’s recent study on Playstation 5 gamers’ post-game habits revealed some intriguing findings.

Only 50%. Gory Gasaway, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Vice President of Product, Gameplay, and Player Experiences, told GameFile that 50% of American gamers use this sleep mode. Sony was surprised to find that half of users turn off the console, expecting “a lot more people would put their console into sleep mode than turn it off completely.”

Different choices. Casaway says, “It ended up being about a 50/50 split between the two options across all of our players. That meant that about 50% of our users turned on and landed on our ‘Explore’ page if they were in the US, and the page for their last game if they were outside the US.

Area-specific differences. Another factor: power outages are common in some parts of the world, so users turn off the console to avoid hardware damage. The sleep mode is a great benefit for the player because it allows the session to be resumed at the same point and uses little power. This may have skewed the survey results.

Low energy use. Sony has been reducing its hardware’s carbon footprint and eliminating hazardous materials from console production for some time. This is also being done by improving PS5 energy efficiency, reducing consumption, and adding electricity-optimization options. The latter includes the ability to automatically shut down the PS5 after a certain number of hours and configure the sleep mode to perform more or less tasks while hibernating.

Sony Interactive Entertainment reported in its earnings call that half of PlayStation’s monthly active players use older consoles. The company sold 59.2 million PS5s as of March 31, 2024, and 118 million monthly active PlayStation Network users are split between the PS5 and older consoles, mostly the PS4.

PlayStation 3 players are still active.
Journalist Stephen Totilo noted that Sony Group CFO Hiroki Totoki specifically mentioned this during the earnings call. The company expects PS5’s active user base to grow as players switch to the current generation.

PlayStation 3 appears to be active among the 59 million active players on older consoles, though PS4 dominates. A presentation leaked during the Insomniac Games ransomware attack showed 2.3 million active PS3 players until early 2023. This figure may have dropped since then, but the console’s age makes it impressive.
