She-Hulk: Abogada Hulka

Marvel needs heroes like She-Hulk (or Hulka in Spain). She is new to the MCU, so it eliminates the feeling of endless recycling that Marvel has been dragging for years (and that weighed down ‘Hawkeye’ and ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘).

On the other hand, she doesn’t have a complex lore that makes Ms. Marvel or Moon Knight seem out of place in the MCU. Initially, her concept is clear: a female Hulk.

This very clear concept (and somewhat outdated at its origin, a mere comic exploitation of Hulk’s international success thanks to the late seventies television series) receives a few barbs from a series that doesn’t mind launching light feminist darts at the respectable. Hulk unleashes fury, but what happens when a woman does it?

This 30-minute first episode’s funniest moments come from She-Hulk’s answers. She-Hulk shouts “Macho! Macho!” when she lashes out in the company of her cousin Hulk (the episode’s co-star), hitting the ground and throwing rocks into the air, showing how simplistic it is to think a superhero can only break things.

The whole series has a friendly, non-conflictive humour that, yes, requires a certain initiation into the MCU codes, but even veteran Marvel viewers will identify with Thor’s comics or ‘Avengers’ post-credits scene with the snack after the battle.

A running gag about Captain America that we hope will return in later episodes is the best part of this first episode after the credits.

A new Emerald Giant
Even though ‘Ms. Marvel’ is a light youth drama, ‘Loki’ is a multidimensional adventure, and ‘Wandavision’ is a metanarrative drama, Marvel series never want to give up the epic nature of their characters. ‘She-Hulk’ is a lawyer comedy with a superheroine character, as disclosed by its title.

The next episodes of ‘She-Hulk’ must stay true to Dan Slott’s comics, which inspired it, while adding elements from other character arcs. As in the 1980s John Byrne stage, She-Hulk speaks to the camera and breaks the fourth wall, but we are unlikely to see the title’s risky metanarrative games.

‘She-Hulk’ finds its identity in not wanting to be the umpteenth superhero demystification, but a good lawyer comedy with green people. For now (and having improved the digital effects to the minimum acceptable, although the constant presence of CGI gives everything an artificial touch that plays against it), this episode, Hulk’s appearance, and its ability to set the stage for the whole series in 30 minutes show its narrative agility and great character construction.

We’ll see Daredevil and Abomination, Titania briefly appears and will likely return, and we’ll never forget Ultima or Behemoth. When the MCU’s DNA must mix with courts, final arguments, and calls to order, we’ll see how well a series that currently clarifies some superhero sitcom mysteries will be refined.
