The musician-“inquiokupas” dispute highlights the country’s housing market issues.
Sevillian singer Manu Tenorio has made more headlines than he did in his best years at the ‘Operación Triunfo’ academy more than two decades ago. Modern articles about him have little to do with music, tours, reality shows, or gossip press, where “triunfitos” usually operate. He would rather be categorised as the Spanish housing and rental crisis.
The Sevillian has become the best example of the country’s residential market problem overnight, with accusations and loud outbursts on social media and in studios. That and how broken landlord-tenant relations are.
What happened? According to Manu Tenorio, “squatters” have been a problem for months. Summary, broad strokes. Nuances are more complicated.
Tenorio demands that his Sanlúcar de Barrameda tenants “return” the property and pay thousands of euros in outstanding payments for over a year. The tenants say they have received several Treasury letters ordering them not to pay the Seville musician because, as they told Antena3 a few days ago, he has a “million-dollar debt”. The Treasury’s order wouldn’t be exceptional then.
Do we know nothing else? No. In recent days, statements, exclusives, and accusations have been released instead of reliable information. The most vocal have been Tenorio and his entourage. They allege that the Sanlúcar de Barrameda tenants have not paid rent for over a year, owing over 10,000 euros, and remain in the house.
“I have some squatters, they have no other name because for the term ‘tenants’ to be used there has to be an agreement between the landlord and tenant, and I have been asking these people by all means for over a year to give me back my house and there is no way to get them out,” the singer said.
What does the other side say? The program ‘Y ahora Sonsoles’ spoke to tenants behind closed doors and found that they have not stopped paying or consider themselves “squatters”. “We received two letters from the Treasury telling us not to pay Manu Tenorio because he has a million-dollar debt,” they say: “How are we going to pay him if the Treasury asks us for the money by letter?”
ElDiario.es reports a four-year rental contract for a Sanlúcar house for a family of five, including three minors. Their final claim is that the house is damaged.
Tenorio responded that his Treasury situation is a payment deferral “like many other Spanish citizens.” In an interview on COPE, the musician said he has requested a Treasury debt-free certificate but won’t release it. He says otherwise would be “submitting to the dictatorship of unsavoury people.”
And that? No. Tenorio is a media figure, and his disputes with tenants may be juicy for the gossip press, but the case’s tone has caused massive controversy. The musician has defended his position against “squatters.” in streaming, TV dishes, radio stations, and networks for days. Often with an exalted tone, bordering on outburst, as in a deleted video about the case.
“You huge bunch of imbeciles, since you’re asking me to justify that I’m up to date with my Treasury payments, which I’ll do, and yet, the property owners owe more than 10,000 euros without a contract… Don’t you want them to prove they’re current with the Treasury? “He challenged.
Only their voices? Absolutely not. Another reason the controversy has gained media attention is its quick political entry. Podemos says Tenorio promotes “false discourse of squatting” and “discredits” its tenants. The spokesperson, María Teresa Pérez, affirmed the family’s claim that the Andalusian singer owes a significant debt to the Treasury. “Therefore, the Administration requires the tenants to pay directly to the public coffers,” said she.
Tenorio called her a “liar” on X and demanded her resignation. He also invited Pablo Iglesias, former Podemos secretary general, to his program to discuss the case. “If he invited the squatters […], to be equal and lead by example, I demand that he invite me,” he said.
The case reveals what? The key is that. The Tenorio controversy goes beyond the Sevillian musician’s style. The case is so detailed because it involves Spain’s real estate market and rentals. More specifically, of three factors that transcend the “ex-triunfito” case’s specific details, even though they’re not public.
First is the difficulty in meeting rent in a large part of the country due to an exorbitant 60% price increase over the last decade, which has caused many households to fall behind on property tax, community tax, mortgage, and rent payments.
