Orange County Battles Summer COVID-19

With the positivity rate climbing to above 18%, Orange County is dealing with yet another wave of the Summer COVID-19 virus, which is a spike that has not been seen in quite some time.

However, it is not having an impact on hospitals at a level that is even somewhat comparable to the early waves that occurred in 2020 and 2021. During those years, hospitals were forced to utilize their parking lots as emergency rooms because they were so full.

Infectious disease specialist Dr. Shruti Gohil, who works at the Medical Center in Orange, California, at the University of California Irvine, explained that this is due to the extensive vaccines and previous diseases.

There is an increase in the number of people who test positive for COVID, although the number of hospitalizations that are solely caused by COVID is rather modest. According to Gohil, who treats patients with COVID as well as a significant number of other conditions, “and probably because that’s the success of the vaccine and overall immunity.”

According to Gohil, she and her colleagues anticipated the wave that is unfolding now.

In a phone conversation that took place a week ago, Gohil stated that “people are out and about, they are traveling, they are on vacation, and there are a lot of crowded settings that people are going to.”

She also mentioned that persons who are elderly or who have preexisting medical concerns are at a greater risk.

Additionally, she stated that the positivity rate might be higher than what is reported due to the fact that testing isn’t as high as it was in the beginning stages of the pandemic.

During the years 2020 and 2021, there were numerous enormous testing sites dispersed around Orange County and the state. These testing locations ranged from parking areas at Disneyland to parking lots inside of college campuses in South County.

Daniel Parker, an epidemiologist at the University of California, Irvine, adds that huge testing programs, as well as community test centers, have for the most part ceased entirely.
