Night line: waking night secrets

Ligne de nuit is a piece that will give voice to the fragments of nightlife confessed by night owls, insomniacs, and other awake

individuals of Quebec who come alive while others let themselves to be lulled by the slumber. The Carrefour International de Theater is going to go fishing for secrets with its production of Ligne de nuit.

The Carrefour answering machine will be gathering testimonials from Quebec’s nocturnal wildlife between the hours of midnight and six in the morning during the next month and for a few more weeks. The play Ligne de nuit, which is an audio dive into the hidden side of the day, that is, this realm that shakes in the light of the moon, will have these selected confidences serve as the music for the show.

“I didn’t suspect that there was all this life teeming at night in Quebec,” says the artist Maureen Roberge, who is responsible for stitching together the anonymous voice messages to produce a communal piece. Roberge is astonished by the revelation.

At the conclusion of the clip, the night owls reveal the things that keep them awake during the times when practically everyone is dreaming except for themselves. These shards of the night build “a portrait of these solitudes that meet” in the small hours of the morning. From the drunk partygoer to the nurse at the end of the shift, from the new parents on enforced standby to the long-haul truckers, these individuals are all juxtaposed against one another.

The web of a “little-known universe” that exists “a little in opposition to the world” is woven by these gathered voices, as Maureen Roberge explains more.

With regard to confidentiality, we are very open. “Although it can be quite humorous and lighthearted at times, this approach also reveals a significant amount of humanity,” the conductor explains further. The artist continues by saying that the experience “lifts the veil” on the dark parts of the night and the people that inhabit it. This can be a result of the hubbub that occurs as you leave the bars or confessions that are muttered on the pillow.

Maureen Roberge was able to listen to the dedication of an original when he was up in the middle of the night supervising the fermentation of his handmade yogurt. She was also able to collect the “fable” that was told in spite of himself by a worker who was so fatigued that he drifted away from his own fatigue to the point where he delivered an anthological piece of “accidental poetry” to the voicemail.

An enthusiastic explanation is provided by the artist and actor, who says, “Art is what gives voice to the community and that comes to life outside artistic circles, insider circles.” In addition to this, it makes Quebec City into a theater: when someone tells us what they are experiencing while walking at the foot of the ramparts in the middle of the night, it alters our own perception of the capital.

Roslyn Oades, an Australian documentary theater artist, was unable to sleep, which led to the conception of Nightline, which served as the inspiration for this production. The latter works in conjunction with Carrefour to ensure that its concept is adapted adequately for the Quebec market.

During each performance, there will be a limited audience of approximately forty people, making the performance very intimate. In the same way that telephone operators of the past manually connected and disconnected lines, members of the general public will have the chance to pick up the telephone receivers of their choosing in order to listen to the secrets that are concealed at the end of the line.

According to the artist, “We will find ourselves in the shoes of a night telephone operator,” and he or she guarantees this. As part of the Carrefour international de théâtre, Ligne de nuit will divulge its secrets from June 5 to June 8 at the Périscope theater. This performance is less of a spectacle than it is an auditory and immersive experience.
