New 'Lord of the Rings' film

‘The War of the Rohirrim’ is the new Tolkien film. First of a long series, it seems.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim‘ opens in Spain this week. The new film in the franchise, an animated one, explores Tolkien’s world beyond his trilogy of books (plus ‘The Hobbit’). After a period without adaptation news, recent years have seen more audiovisual translations than ever, but it doesn’t seem enough.

Time for Rohirrim. Helm Hammerhand, king of Rohan, a kingdom of humans who must defend themselves from the Dunlendings, will be told 183 years before Peter Jackson. The anime-style film is directed by Kenji Kamiyama, who also directed ‘Ghost in the Shell’ and ‘Blade Runner: Black Lotus’.

LOTR is here for a while. We haven’t seen so many audiovisual adaptations of Tolkien’s work. Due to the cost of assembling them, book adaptations have been rare. The 2014 ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy concluded. In 2023, the disastrous ‘Gollum’ and ‘Return to Moria’ followed the 2014 and 2017 ‘Shadow of Mordor’ and ‘Shadow of War’.

Amazon too. The 2022 Amazon-financed film ‘The Rings of Power’ stirred up ‘The Lord of the Rings’ waters. Although fans were highly critical, it put the franchise back on everyone’s lips and unleashed endless projects: a new film about Gollum, up to five seasons of ‘Rings of Power’, Amazon Games’ endlessly in development MMORPG, the cozy and modest ‘Tales of the Shire’, and, of course, new film adaptations of the original books.

Never saturated! You may be the only one who thinks Tolkien-based projects are saturated. Tolkien’s IP, which is too expensive and still unable to generate many products per year, contributed to Embracer Group’s 10% drop in its entertainment and services division in mid-November.

Rohirrim is just beginning. Tolkien is not alone to blame. Embracer’s PC and console sales from its other licenses fell 46%, with games like ‘PayDay 3’ and ‘Remnant 2’ underperforming. After ‘Rohirrim’, the company hopes to improve the ‘Lord of the Rings’ IP’s image. In the company’s shareholder report, CEO Lars Wingefors said he is confident that the anime could boost profits and encourage viewers to play its Tolkien-based survival game, Return to Moria, released last summer.

The Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings films are good but not great. My bias is that I grew up when they were released, the perfect age for action-packed gritty fantasy. The books, Silmarillion, Tolkien’s letters, and everything else I could get my Hobbit hands on have been read.

The movies keep calling me back. The special features include nearly 40 hours of documentary footage about how movies are made with care and precision, as well as four or five commentaries over the films in which cast members and workers from all departments explain each scene in detail .

These films are good too. What did you expect when translating a massive tome to a new medium? Aragorn and Boromir are more interesting thanks to Peter Jackson, but Faramir and Gimli are dirty. The story mostly follows the right events in order. Because of his attention to detail, Jackson makes you care about Tolkien’s characters most.

New Lord of the Rings movies are in the works. Nobody wants or needs this. We’ve learned that New Line is making new films, but no details have been revealed. Hollywood should not remake the iconic trilogy yet, but the alternative could be worse.

MCU-ifying Tolkien’s work. We’ll get a film about Aragorn and Gandalf searching for Gollum, a prequel about Smeagol’s life as a Hobbit and his complicated friendship with Deagol, and so much shitty Legolas content because Orlando Bloom won’t turn down a paycheck.

Many great stories could be told in Tolkien’s world. Begin with Beren and Luthien. How about a gritty Thronesian take on Tolkien’s most tragic and incestuous tale, the Children of Hurin? I believe an artistic director could enhance Tolkien’s Legendarium song, Ainulindalë, which created the world. Maiar, Valar, Glaurung, and Morgoth could fight Fingolfin. The War of the Rohirrim, an anime, could reimagine obscure Tolkien stories. Instead, we’ll get hastily written cash-ins with familiar characters, too much CGI, and many references so even casual fans can say they got it on social media.
