‘Monster Commando’, which you can watch on Max, is the pioneer of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC universe. It may go unnoticed among all the premieres on streaming every week. We forget failed projects like “Flash” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” and focus on a new future, starting with Gunn’s new Superman film.

From the first minute of this series, the plot has the same starting point, so it’s impossible not to think of ‘The Peacemaker’ or ‘The Suicide Squad’ (the references to Gunn’s film about the group of antiheroes are constant, from Amanda Waller and Rick Flag to the direct references to that undeserved DC box office failure). A group of exiled superheroes are released from prison to protect a Balkan princess for the government.

The writing style shows Gunn’s signature: sarcastic, mischievous, bloody, and tender, reminiscent of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, his other (and more pleasant) supergroup of antiheroes. Comparisons between Weasel and Rocket Raccoon or the protagonists’ need to feel like outsiders and many of his other powerful characters’ self-description as villains, mercenaries, or outlaws are inevitable.

This ‘Monster Commando’ could not be more appropriate as a modest but powerful starting shot for the new DC Universe, as it makes two things clear: Gunn’s personality will be key in several proposals, and the intention to distance itself from Marvel is clear in a production that resembles ‘Harley Quinn’, ‘Suicide Squad’, and ‘The Pacificated’ but not Disney. Let’s hope it’s just the start of many good and different things.

In mid-2022, HBO Max executives approached James Gunn about adapting another DC Comics series after his hit “Peacemaker.” His first idea was an animated show loosely based on the DC Comics Creature Commandos, a group of monsters formed into a black ops team to kill their enemy by any means. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav hired Gunn and “Peacemaker” executive producer Peter Safran to run DC Studios and relaunch the DC Universe after he wrote the seven-episode first season on spec in a few weeks.

Gunn says, “I just liked the idea of a soft intro to our universe in which metahumans, monsters, magic and incredibly complicated political situations exist.” “We see the DCU through an animated perspective where it costs as much to create a battlefield as a kitchen—well, not exactly, but not as dissimilar as in a film.”

Gunn was able to make the show as violent and sexual as he has in live action, as Dr. Phosphorus (voiced by Alan Tudyk) uses his radioactive skin to melt his enemies’ faces and multiple characters disrobe for passionate encounters. Gunn warns that DC Studios projects won’t always push boundaries.

He says, “One of the main things I want to establish is that you can do anything at DC Studios.” “We make complete family meals. Our work can be general-audience, like ‘Superman.’ We can make something violent and sexual, like this (which I didn’t think was). ‘Peacemaker’ is more violent and sexual. I want every project to have its own voice. A world of sex and violence isn’t the goal. Creating a world where we can tell stories about one type of character in different genres.”
