Legendary vampire hunter finds his ultimate foe: Marvel’s release schedule

Marvel has announced that ‘Blade’, the reboot of the vampire-hunting hero Wesley Snipes popularized at the start of the century in a film (and two sequels) that are among the best Marvel adaptations ever, will not be released in 2025. To compensate, ‘Predator’ returns, but it’s bittersweet. He Who Walks by Day may be done for.

From November to unknown. ‘Predator: Badlands’ will replace the film on November 7, 2025. This is Marvel’s most significant change to its future calendar, which includes three 2028 films: February 18, May 5, and November 10. A maximum of three Marvel films a year was announced by CEO Bob Iger in the summer, and Captain America, Thunderbolts, and Fantastic Four are already scheduled for 2024.

Disaster timeline. Wesley Snipes reprised Blade in ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’, paradoxically marking his first MCU appearance. Mahershala Ali played the new Blade in an uncredited vocal cameo in ‘Eternals’ post-credits sequence. It was 2021, but the film was announced in 2019. Event timeline:

Marvel had a good run before ‘Eternals’. The cast of ‘Eternals’ and Natalie Portman’s return to ‘Thor‘ are announced at Comic-Con. The Blade project is revealed.

2021
First major delay due to pandemic, but we have a screenwriter (Stacy Osei-Kuffour, ‘Watchmen’) and director (Bassim Tariq, ‘Mogul Mowgli’). Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre join the cast late this year and early next year, and November 3, 2023 is the release date.

Tariq quit two months before production. Then it became clear that Ali was not a typical film producer: he influenced decisions and helped find a director replacement. Production halted for the first time, and the release was pushed to September 6, 2024, along with other Phase 5 and Phase 6 titles.

Soon after, new scriptwriters were considered. Beau DeMayo, who wrote ‘X-Men ’97’, tweeted that he had three different drafts. One was a period film. Another, a vampire-themed ‘The Raid’: he believed that, like ‘John Wick’, a good action film could be made on a small budget, but Marvel was incapable of doing so.

His successors were Michael Starrbury, screenwriter of ‘When They See Us’, and Yann Demange, of ‘Lovecraft Country’. This couple’s dark, violent approach prevented Marvel from implementing their ideas.

April 2022
Mia Goth, the new B-movie horror muse, plays vampire Lilith. Nic Pizzolatto, creator of ‘True Detective‘, joins as a screenwriter after the writers’ strike and delays. He returns to the present. Due to MCU tradition, Marvel wants to begin filming in June even though the third act is not written. Production stops as the strike continues.

Fall 2023
‘The Marvels’ box office failure impacts its release calendar, and Jonathan Majors’ conviction prohibits making Kang the villain in future MCU films. With only ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ released in 2024, an impasse is declared.

Variety then publishes a devastating article about ‘Blade’s delicate moment. Marvel has yet to find a script that convinces it, and in the one that appears to be moving forward, ‘Blade’ is a secondary character with three new vampire hunters who learn “vital lessons.” The film’s budget was unusually low, under $100 million.

December 2023
The film will be delayed until November 7, 2025, and Michael Green (‘Logan’, ‘Alien: Covenant’) will write it.

Spring 2024
Pierre leaves the cast and Demange becomes director. Eric Pearson, Marvel’s Fantastic Four co-writer, is next. Feige announces that production is underway and will be rated R in the summer, but Marvel could still drop the film. Ali is filming ‘Jurassic World’, which will keep him busy for months.Marvel’s inability to complete a project that deviates from its very secure rails is perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this entire process. Making an action movie with vampires is easy (the ‘Blade’ trilogy and the ‘Underworld’ saga swept the box office), but you must keep the budget low and be open to new ideas. Just what Marvel needs now.
