'inZOI' wanted to be the new 'The Sims'

Expect a delay in creating a hyper-realistic version of ‘The Sims’.

To succeed ‘The Sims,’ it was meticulously planned for a season. ‘InZOI’ knew its graphic realism made the cartoonish Sims a kid’s game. ‘inZOI’ will not survive the life simulation genre’s crisis.

Going to 2025. PUBG: Battlegrounds creator Krafton’s project is scheduled for launch in March 2025 after a testing phase that the studio says yielded inconsistent results. The game was supposed to launch in Early Access at the end of the year after a successful demo that allowed hyper-realistic character creation.

The raised game. The game’s producer, Hyungjun “Kjun” Kim, said on Discord that tester feedback convinced them to delay it. He has been cryptic and grandiloquent: developing a game is “like raising a human child” because both require “extreme love and care”. Continuing the metaphor, “of all primates, raising a human child to adulthood takes the longest, because humans must be prepared to endure and adapt to a constantly changing environment”. He adds: “this is how I see our journey with inZOI: a game that we will nurture together from its birth in Early Access.” Deeply philosophical.

One competitor… ‘InZOI’ is one of many social simulators whose plans have been scrapped recently. The Paradox show ‘Life by You’ was canceled in June. It’s a realistic project that was delayed repeatedly until the studio shut it down more than a year after its release date. The game’s only trailer showed an open world where we could control any character and take vehicles.

Two competitors… ‘Paralives’ can be considered an indie version of Maxis and EA’s success due to its independent cut and ‘The Sims’ aesthetic. There was a wide range of home and scenario customization (hanging toilet paper inside or outside the bathroom was discussed). ‘Paralives’ promised to simulate work, social life, and relationships and not just aesthetics. It was announced in 2019, but ‘Paralives’ is still in development and funded by Patreon, casting doubt on its future.

Three competitors… Finally, the monster to defeat. ‘The Sims’ is the mirror everyone looks in, but ‘The Sims 4’ has been on the market since 2014 and could have become a free-to-play game in 2022, the year it received its strange and final expansion, ‘Lycanthropes’. That year, Maxis announced ‘Project Rene’, a new installment, but in 2024, only that it is in development and under invitation-only testing. It will also be free-to-play, but since it will coexist with ‘The Sims 4’ rather than replace it, it is unclear how it will interact with the other games in the series.

Genre overview. Players who have waited years for a realism-based genre renewal are disappointed by ‘inZOI’s delay and producer’s suspicious words. ‘The Sims’ live in their own world with their own rules, so Maxis has never prioritized graphics or realism. The old dream of a videogame that replicates real-world behaviors, appearance, and relationships has yet to come true. Another temporary combat casualty.
