Christmas without A Charlie Brown Christmas is hard to imagine. Like decorating the tree or drinking hot chocolate, the 1965 animated special has become a family tradition.

But this beloved TV special almost didn’t air. CBS executives thought the 25-minute show was too slow, serious, and different from what audiences wanted. A cartoon about a depressed boy seeking psychiatric help? No laughs? Low-brow, poor animation? It was a Bible verse? It appeared doomed to fail or be scrapped.

Despite all odds, it became a classic. Sincerity helped Peanuts become a multimedia empire, not flash or convention.

A Charlie Brown Christmas fascinates me as a business professor who has studied Peanuts. The true story of an unassuming comic book character who made the switch to television and expressed important, thought-provoking ideas without being fired.

A last-minute mix-up prompted the Peanuts special. Coca-Cola wanted to sponsor an animated Christmas special, and McCann-Erickson called producer Lee Mendelson.

Mendelson had failed to get the agency to fund a Peanuts documentary. This time, he assured McCann-Erickson the characters would fit perfectly.

Mendelson called Peanuts comic strip creator Charles “Sparky” Schulz to tell him he had sold A Charlie Brown Christmas and had a few months to write, animate, and air the special.

Schulz, Mendelson, and animator Bill Melendez rushed to create the story. The cartoonist wanted to tell a story that went beyond holiday consumerism.

While Snoopy competes in a Christmas lights contest and Lucy becomes “Christmas Queen” in the neighbourhood play, a depressed Charlie Brown seeks “the true meaning of Christmas.” He visits the local aluminium tree lot, a fad. He prefers the only real tree, a humble, scruffy one inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Fir Tree.”

Bible and Jazz
Schulz’s other decisions were controversial, but those plot points would likely please the network.

The show’s characters would have a genuine, down-to-earth charm because they were voiced by children. Schulz also refused to add a laugh track, a staple of animated TV. He wanted the story’s sincerity to stand without comic relief.

Additionally, Mendelson hired jazz musician Vince Guaraldi to compose a sophisticated soundtrack. The animated show’s music was unique, combining provocative depth with childhood innocence.

Schulz’s insistence on including the Nativity story in the special’s most important scene alarmed executives.

Linus reads Luke 2, which describes an angel appearing to

shepherds, in the stillness:

“And the angel said, Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people.”

“Christ the Lord is born to you this day in the city of David.”

Highest praise to God. Peace and goodwill to men on earth,” he says, taking his security blanket and walking to the wings. After some thought, the gang decides Charlie Brown’s scrawny tree just “needs a little love.”

Mendelson and Melendez were hesitant when Schulz proposed this. America was mostly Protestant, but after World War II, society was more open to Catholic and Jewish Americans. By the 1960s, many entertainment companies avoided religious themes.

“The Bible thing freaks us out,” CBS executives said after seeing the special’s proofs. There wasn’t time to rewrite the show’s dramatic arc, and pulling it wasn’t an option since the ads had aired.

Fun and philosophy
Good thing the Peanuts special was a hit when it aired on December 9, 1965. Nearly half of American households watched, and the show won Emmys and Peabodys. Schulz delivered an honest, heartfelt message that transcended consumerism, which audiences wanted.

For over 50 years, millions have watched the show’s annual rerun on CBS, ABC, and now Apple TV+.

A 1965 letter from Florida viewer Betty Knorr was one of my favourite finds while researching Schulz’s spiritual biography, A Charlie Brown Religion. She praised the show for highlighting “the true meaning of Christmas” in a time when “mention of God in general (is) being silenced.”

Schulz’s work is magical because it transcends demographics and ideologies. Some fans find comfort in the show’s gentle faith message, while others enjoy it secularly.

Schulz’s simple but touching art and humour can do two things. They can be safe spaces for heavy psychiatric, cultural, and theological reflections. If you prefer, Peanuts cartoons can be touching, festive entertainment.

The Peanuts and Christmas industries thrive today. Schulz’s 1960s special nearly failed due to commercial forces, but they eventually aired it. The symbol of innocence, hope, and faith endures.
