The Alaouite monarch’s illness has highlighted his 21-year-old son, who could succeed him.

El Confidencial reported that Mohamed VI, King of Morocco, has deteriorated physically in his last public appearances, raising concerns. The monarch’s fragility and weight loss have kept him away from Alaouite royal house activities. Alarms about the sovereign’s health have grown as his public presence decreases.

The face of his son, Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, who could become king at 21, is therefore important. Princess Leonor, Amalia of Holland, and Elisabeth of Belgium, among others, do not experience this. Both the shy prince, known by his Moroccan nickname, and the king’s ex-wife, Lalla Salma, are under watch in case of an emergency.

First in line to the throne, Mohamed VI’s son has been destined to rule as Hassan III since birth, in honour of his grandfather Hassan II. Moulay Hassan has gained prominence as the monarch’s illness progresses, even though he has been training for years to become heir.

Moulay Hassan started attending official events at 15. Mohamed saw in his first-born son an ally and a great help in getting ahead due to his serious illnesses that have prevented him from carrying out a normal institutional agenda for years. In fact, Hassan was already travelling alone at that age, representing his father at the Count of Paris’ funeral.

The young heir attended Spain’s official state visit to Morocco and all its events from the start. He even witnessed bilateral agreements between governments. He witnessed government issues being resolved while sitting to his father’s left, attentive and serene. He learnt international diplomacy at this event, making him one of the most precocious and prepared princes of the current dynasties.

Moulay Hassan’s education has been different from his European counterparts because he was involved in state affairs from a young age while attending the Royal College and Royal Air School. He later enrolled in a Marrakech aeronautical high school because he wanted to be a pilot. His father doesn’t mind as long as he remembers his royal duties. In his personal life, Hassan is a young football fan and Barça fan. Music and sports are his other passions. He travels the world with his mother and younger sister, Lalla Kahdija.

Mohamed raised his heir like his father, King Hassan II. At ten, Moulay Hassan represented his father at the funeral of French President Georges Pompidou on his own. The king is following Moulay Hassan’s example.

Mohammed VI (born August 21, 1963) is the King of Morocco. After his father, King Hassan II, died on July 23, 1999, he became king.[2]

Mohammed has extensive business interests in Morocco’s economic sectors. The US$2.1 billion to US$5.2 billion range is his estimated net worth.[4][5] Forbes named him Africa’s richest king and the world’s fifth richest monarch in 2015.[6][7]

Mohammed first reformed the family code, Mudawana, to empower Moroccan women.[8] In 2010, WikiLeaks diplomatic cables implicated Mohammed and his closest advisors in court corruption.[9] Moroccan protests against government corruption were part of the Arab Spring in 2011. Mohammed responded with several reforms and a new constitution. On July 1, 2011, a referendum approved these reforms.[10]

Mohammed started attending the Royal Palace Quranic school at four because his father wanted him to learn religion and politics.[1] He started school with an hour-long Quranic recitation at 6 am and formal lessons. He studied primary and secondary school at the Collège Royal, a specialised college within the palace walls. Hassan II chose 12 smart classmates to help Mohammed study, wanting him to compete. In Le Roi prédateur, a 2012 biography by two French journalists, Hassan ordered his aides to give Mohammed twenty lashes when he fell behind in school.[12]
