“Young voters have relatively little trust in their leaders and institutions, including traditional media,” said Ashley Spillane, an expert on civic engagement and the author of the report, for the American media in an interview with ABC News.

On the other hand, a celebrity whose devotion appears true to those who follow them can promote involvement. Authenticity is sought after by influencers for 88% of Generation Z (also known as those born after 1995) and “millennials” (also known as those born between 1980 and 2000). According to Debra Cleaver, the creator of Vote.org, “the amount of excitement she generated simply by speaking out was unprecedented.” At the same time, on September 19, 2023, she repeated the action by posting it on her Instagram profile. Once more, the effect was felt almost immediately. The site known as Vote.org had logged more than 35,000 new registrations by the next day.

Ashley Spillane is of the opinion that the influence of celebrities makes it feasible to make voting more “trendy” and “cool” without making it appear to be a waste of time. This is a way to compensate for the fact that young voters are not as likely to participate in the electoral process.
