“The Democratic ticket allows for the language of rectitude and authority, which is embodied by the candidate for the presidency of the United States, to be combined with a social ethic of care for the most vulnerable,

which is implemented by the governor of Minnesota,” explains historian Sylvie Laurent in an opinion piece that the newspaper “Le Monde” published.

In contrast to the awards, recent events have shown us the breadth and durability of the societal craziness that befalls those who let their guard down. On July 6, an African-American woman named Sonya Massey was killed by a white police officer who shot her at her house in Springfield, Illinois. She was in the midst of a psychotic episode when Massey made the decision to phone the police for assistance because she was afraid of being robbed. Her mental suffering was understood by the two officers who arrived at the scene; nonetheless, after she appeared to be threatening to them, one of them told her that he was “going to shoot her in the head” and then proceeded to do so.

Since the death of Breonna Taylor, who was killed by the police at her house in the year 2020, this umpteenth instance serves to remind us that the level of systemic violence committed by the police against black people has not lessened all that much. The fact that the police, and not specialized medical services, are the ones who step in to help in the event of a psychiatric emergency is another issue. This is because the public security policy that is in place punishes a great deal more than it helps.

A choreography that is skilled

In order to politicize this problem, it is up to a third black woman to come up with a narrative that does honor to both Biles’ accomplishment and Massey’s tragedy. It would appear that Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, has, up to this point, opted to use the conventional judicial language of authority and order, that of a rigid prosecutor confronting the “criminal Trump.” She had imposed a rigorous criminal law in her capacity as a magistrate in the state of California, and she had refused to exercise more stringent control over the conduct of the police. Not until the year 2020, when she was running for office, did she make her voice heard regarding the necessity of redistributing budgets from police stations to social centers. In this day and age, when she is under attacks from the Republican camp and misogyny, she must embody the sentence rather than the care. This is more important than ever before.
