The Batman’s most influential audiovisual piece experimented with formats.
We love all the Batman animated series, including the recent one on Prime Video, but none as much as the legendary ‘Batman: The Animated Series’, in which Bruce Timm took Tim Burton’s gothic tendencies and the character’s comic book reformulation and gave it a radical and hyper-stylized facelift.
The drawings reflected this new aesthetic, which drew as much from expressionist cinema as from the darker, more adult tone that had given the character a new look since Frank Miller’s comics revolution. Artists working on black paper was a novel way to make Gotham a twilight and terrifying city.
Eric Radomski’s idea gave the illustrations a dark, black atmosphere where Batman could move like a fish in water, hidden in the shadows. This decision fit the series’ design of Gotham, which combines a mediaeval city full of massive fortresses with a futuristic city influenced by ‘Metropolis’.
The decision was also practical: most of the series’ scenes took place at night, so artists only had to draw a silhouette or glowing eyes, reducing production time. This atmospheric and well-crafted Gotham hero series is available on Prime Video.
Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS)[1] is an American animated superhero TV series based on DC Comics’ Batman. Developed by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski and produced by Warner Bros. Animation, it aired 85 episodes on Fox Kids from September 5, 1992, to September 15, 1995.[2][3][4] The series became The Adventures of Batman & Robin midway through.
Since its release, Batman: The Animated Series has been lauded for its writing, art design, voice acting, orchestrated soundtrack, and modernisation of its title character’s source material.[5][6] It won multiple Daytime Emmys[7] and the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Programming due to its critical success.[8]
The New Batman Adventures, a 1997 Kids’ WB spin-off, featured new animation. It has 24 episodes and is often included in syndicated rerun packages and home media releases as the final season. Batman: The Animated Series was the first in the DC Animated Universe, which produced more animated TV shows, feature films, comic books, and video games with the same creative talent, including Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993).
Producer Alan Burnett wrote “Silent Night” without dialogue to explore Batman’s sexual life, but it was never produced. Burnett planned to have a female vampire bite Batman to drink his blood, but it never happened.[9]
The series has a notable supporting cast. Many famous actors voiced villains. Most notable was Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy and became a voice actor best known for his “cheerfully deranged” Joker.[10] Tim Curry was cast, but bronchitis prevented him from recording.Later Riddler voice actor John Glover auditioned for the Joker role. Hamill, the cast’s biggest Batman fan, said his Amadeus laughs got him the role. Instead of recording the actors separately, voice director Andrea Romano recorded them together in one studio. All subsequent DC Animated Universe series used this method. Al Pacino declined to voice Two-Face in the series, so Richard Moll was cast. The cast also included Ron Perlman as Clayface, Roddy McDowall as the Mad Hatter, David Warner as Ra’s al Ghul, Michael York as Count Vertigo, Kate Mulgrew as Red Claw, George Murdock as Boss Biggis, Ed Asner as Roland Daggett, and George Dzundza as the Ventr
Harley Quinn, the Joker’s assistant, was so popular that DC Comics added her to mainstream comic book continuity. The series’ Penguin was redesigned after Batman Returns, which was in production during the first season. The Clock King and other lesser-known series characters were revived. Clayface, Mr. Freeze, and other villains were also transformed, with Mr. Freeze becoming a tragic figure whose “frigid exterior [hid] a doomed love and vindictive fury”.
Warner Bros. Animation outsourced the first season’s 65 episodes to Spectrum Animation, Sunrise, Studio Junio, and Tokyo Movie Shinsha in Japan, Dong Yang Animation, Koko Enterprises Ltd., and AKOM in South Korea, Jade Animation in Hong Kong, Blue Pencil in Spain, and Network of Animation (NOA) in Canada.[13] TMS animated season 1’s opening theme. Many episodes like “Cat Scratch Fever” and “Moon of the Wolf” had inconsistent animation, which got AKOM fired.[14]
Dong Yang animated most of the 20 second-season episodes, except for three by Studio Junio (“A Bullet for Bullock”, “Avatar” and “Baby-Doll”) and one by Jade Animation (“The Terrible Trio”).[13]
