Former Las Vegas official convicted of murdering journalist

(Los Angeles) On Wednesday, a former elected official from Las Vegas was given a life sentence for the 2022 murder of an investigative journalist who was looking into allegations of harassment and favoritism in the politician’s office.

The jury was shown throughout the trial how Robert Telles fatally stabbed veteran reporter Jeff German after hiding outside his house in September 2022. The killing was unanimously deemed to be “intentional” and “premeditated” by the jury.

“Justice has been served,” Nevada’s Clark County district attorney, Steve Wolfson, declared to reporters. “Today’s verdict should send a message, and that message is clear: Any attempt to muzzle the media or to muzzle or intimidate a journalist will not be tolerated,” he stated.

Reporter Jeff German, 69, of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, covered the county post held by Robert Telles in May 2022. Telles was then a candidate for reelection.

A month prior to the election, the article was released, including charges of partiality and the existence of an improper relationship between an employee and an elected person. Despite his denial of the facts as presented, Robert Telles was not elected.

Based on the evidence shown during the proceedings, he had gone to Jeff German’s house in September of that year, whereupon he had been enraged. He then went to hide in the bushes, attacked the journalist, and fatally stabbed him.

The former public figure denied being the murder’s mastermind and said the police had disregarded hints that might have implicated other persons. This lawyer by training claimed to be the victim of a plot in a lengthy courtroom diatribe.

and returning for a second round of deliberations and returning with a guilty decision, the jury sentenced Robert Telles to life in prison with a minimum of twenty years.

Glenn Cook, executive director of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, stated, “Jeff was killed for doing the kind of work he took great pride in: His work held an elected official accountable for bad behavior and allowed voters to choose to elect someone else to that office.”

Since 1992, the United States has seen the killings of 14 journalists and one media employee related to their profession, according to the non-governmental organization Committee to Protect Journalists.
