Disney should learn from the archaeologist’s video game success.

Bethesda’s new game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, lets us choose between widescreen and super-narrow, classic adventure film-style viewing. It’s cosmetic, but it shows how much this new Indiana Jones adventure relies on its cinematic roots. Thematically, aesthetically, and financially.

Receptions varied. Just days before the game’s Game Pass release, critics had mostly positive reviews, with a few notable dissenters. Some call it the archaeologist’s best adventure in 30 years, while others say a movie would have been better. It’s been called a masterpiece and one of the year’s biggest events, but the character’s legacy feels heavy.

Positive archaeological vibes. However, critics gave the game an 87 on Metacritic, but it has yet to receive enough public ratings since it just hit stores and Game Pass. In any case, ‘Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’ is Microsoft’s first Triple.

A game to be released on Playstation, kicking off its ambitious plan to turn any home device into an Xbox thanks to Game Pass and cloud gaming. It had previously released titles like Deathloop, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded, but never simultaneously announced its multiplatform condition.

Lost brand search. Disney, owner of LucasFilm, is another non-Microsoft company interested in this new Indiana Jones adventure. We all know the franchise’s prestige has changed since ‘The Last Crusade’ was released. It took almost 20 years to follow up with ‘Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’,

which is now considered a disaster. The latest film, ‘The Dial of Destiny’, was a box office disaster that cost almost $300 million and should have grossed 600 to avoid losing money. It grossed 384—Disney’s worst since John Carter.

Disney, watch out. Disney should monitor this ‘Great Circle”s critical, public, and financial results. Disney wants to continue exploiting Indiana Jones’s millions of fans (which is why Machinegames‘ game is receiving its main praise and criticism:

it often seems like a showcase of the archaeologist’s greatest hits, which many fans like and others don’t). But… how? Careful observation of the game’s findings and virtues will help it shape future films and series.It happened with Star Wars.

This process is reminiscent of ‘Star Wars: Outlaws’, a recent Ubisoft game with worse reviews and sales than Indiana Jones. ‘Star Wars’, Lucasfilm’s main property, is at an even more pronounced dead end than the archaeologist’s films, generating series and video games that point to very different paths, tones, styles, and arguments, but none as definitive as, for example, marking a direction for future films in the franchise, authentic rectors of the series’ style for years.

In the coming years, we’ll see if Disney learned from Outlaws’ sales slump. This “Great Circle” may already be making Disney waves. Indeed, it’s one of its most charismatic traits.
