Disney has the best way to end park lines

Disney began offering a $400 per person per day ticket that allows its owner to skip any line without having to save a spot or make an appointment, the most common way to avoid hours in lines, yesterday. It will be called the Lightning Lane Premier Pass, and its expensive price will set it apart from other park tickets like the Lightning Lane Single Pass, which lets you reserve a time to enter the attraction via app.

Demand and park attendance will determine the price of this new ticket. Disney said the ticket price would drop on park-specific days in 2025 when presenting the system. Tickets cost $129–$449, excluding taxes. It will be sold in limited quantities as a test and does not include park admission; you must pay separately.

The concept is not new; Universal parks offer a similar pass for 119.99–319.99 dollars. Their advantage over Disney is that they allow unlimited access to the same attraction, while Disney’s proposal will only allow one attraction per day, skipping the line.

Waiting hours for a few-minute attraction is one of the tragedies of amusement parks. There are even US university degrees for designing more appealing amusement park queues. Disney’s proposal to eliminate this is Lightning Lane Single Pass, (formerly Fastpass): paying to reserve an attraction time slot.

These passes have always been controversial because they classify visitors by income (for example, FastPass was only available to Disney hotel guests). Disney is also said to be interested in queues, hence the exorbitant price of the new measure: it is fighting queues, but at such a high cost that its impact will be minimal.

Disney invests in turning three-hour lines into attractions with entertainment, mini-shops, and attraction-related extras. For a park to appear full, customers must be eager to move on to the next attraction, so queues are needed. Disney is caught in a contradiction: queues are part of the business, but it profits by appearing to fight them.

Lightning Lane Premier Passes cost more than one-day park admission.

The pass debuts Wednesday at Disneyland Resort and Oct. 30 at Disney World.

The Disneyland Resort website lists a $400 per person per day pass for Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure through Dec. 31. Both Anaheim parks charge $164–$206 for a one-day pass for 10 and older this month.

Next year, the Lightning Lane Premier Pass will cost $300–$400 depending on demand.

Disney-owned Glendale, California station KABC-TV reports Lightning Lane Premier Pass prices at Walt Disney World near Orlando from $129 to $449 per person per day.

Disney said guests at Walt Disney World resorts and other hotels can get the passes. The pass is valid at one Walt Disney World park per day.

According to Disney’s website, one-day Walt Disney World admission for 10 and older costs $149 to $154 this month.

After FastPass, Lightning Lane passes replaced Genie+ passes. Unlike Genie+ and Lightning Lane, FastPass was free. FastPass, which let visitors skip lines at certain times, ended during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before Lightning Lane Premier Pass, Disneyland and Walt Disney World offered Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass. KABC-TV reports that Lightning Lane passes other than the premier require reservations.
