Clavijo accuses the Government and PP of being "complices"

The Canarian president believes Congress would approve a decree law.

Coalición Canaria, Partido Popular, and PSOE continue to criticise migration management as cayucos and other boats continue to arrive in the Canary Islands, where up to 36 boats with 2,083 people have arrived since Christmas Eve.

In a new day, Canarian president Fernando Clavijo has attacked the PP for hiding behind “excuses” and “blocking” an agreement to resolve the migration crisis in the archipelago and has demanded that the Government approve a decree law for the extraordinary distribution of migrant minors, ensuring that Congress will support it.

In an interview with Cadena Ser, he said he “still does not understand” why the government “looks the other way” when it is “the State’s obligation” to grant political asylum to immigrant minors.

“We proposed a decree law that Congress would support for an extraordinary distribution. Over 10 days have passed without a response from the Spanish government. Why do they let this happen? “he lamented.

According to the Canarian president, the Executive has failed to respond to the Canary Islands Government’s distribution mechanisms, even though the islands have 5,812 unaccompanied foreign minors, a figure not seen in 30 years.

Clavijo, who governs with the PP in the autonomous community, also criticised the ‘popular‘ national leadership for using “excuses” to block the agreement. It is “absolute irresponsibility” that the situation is “blocked” and that the PP does not provide a “high-quality response to a humanitarian drama”, even though the Executive has the greatest responsibility.

“They are both accomplices”
In this context, the Canarian president has attacked his government partner and the central Executive: “They are abandoning the Canary Islands to an unprecedented migration crisis and all those children. Both of us are complicit in maintaining the ‘I want to but I don’t want to’ situation.”

He said the Spanish government is “because it does not act and intervene, which is its power under the Constitution” and the PP is “blocking it”.

Finally, he stated that all political forces in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, except Vox, “maintain the same position” on the migration pact and that the central Executive and national PP are the main issue.

PSOE urges Clavijo to leave PP.

In a press conference at the PSOE headquarters in Seville, the socialist leader called Clavijo “enemy at home” and criticised him for “appealing equally to the PP and the PSOE in the face of the drama” of unaccompanied minor immigrants arriving on the islands.

Later, the PP’s national spokesman, Miguel Tellado, accused Pedro Sánchez of using the “migration drama” to “overthrow” the Government of the Canary Islands (CC-PP) and of being “in the call effect” due to his “non-existent” migration policy.
