Borderlands 3 review: Bigger, crazier, viler

After seven years, we were eager for ‘Borderlands 3’, even though ‘Borderlands The Pre-Sequel’ and ‘Tales from the Borderlands’ calmed our nerves. The reason? Something simple like being unique in the market.
Unlike ‘Doom’, Gearbox’s ‘Borderlands‘ series uses humour and disarray to keep you glued to the controller. Like its predecessors, ‘Borderlands 3’ understands excess, but it sometimes forgets that power without control is useless in its pursuit of excess.

Looter shooter insults low-life
Although this is rare, Borderlands’ gunfest and easy jokes don’t draw me in. No. My thing with this saga is its universe, a Mad Max-style post-apocalyptic planet where the population has three options: survive, go crazy, or become a futuristic Indiana Jones.

Always the protagonists, vault hunters seek treasures hidden behind temples and relics of a lost civilisation to control an increasingly decaying universe. The plot, which could be any modern popcorn movie, takes itself as lightly as possible, filling each line of dialogue with nonsense that would embarrass any puritan.

Come for adventure and alien archaeology, stay for laughs if you like humour. If neither of those convinces you, its insanely random weapons may. This saga is responsible for the current trend of looter shooters, which adapt role-playing games with a thousand weapons to open-world FPSs.

From guns with elemental damage to crazy stuff that enhances shooter mechanics. In the spirit of the crazier the better, submachine guns are thrown to explode in the enemy’s face, or machine guns are thrown on the ground to run towards the enemy while venting their magazines. Legged gun. Here was the future.

Knowing its history, ‘Borderlands 3’ uses its strengths to deliver the best saga experience. Explore more planets, use more weapons, play more story and endgame hours… All the ingredients to make it a game to play alone or with others for weeks.

It also polishes everything that needed a fresh coat of paint to make some actions more pleasant. Bursting a monster and seeing coloured objects fly out never gets old, but scanning the ground to see if that new rifle fits was boring.

With numerical ratings added to the already classic classes that seem to have become standardised in the video game industry (golden is legendary and worth using or selling), reviewing loot is much easier.

The same goes for interface improvements like tracking challenges, missions, and the map—even marking which areas you’ve visited—or simple but necessary features like automatic ammunition collection or button-pressing shop replenishment. A more comfortable ‘Borderlands’ on most levels.

Unfortunately, temper and rationality end there. More maps, content, and weapons mean emptier areas, less inspired missions, and weapons so varied that it’s hard to abandon the few that work for you.

With other planets to explore, Pandora is no longer the only playground, but beyond the areas that will host a main or secondary mission, there are usually absurd and enormous roads that are more of a formality than an excuse to drive.
