The outgoing president spent the weekend reassuring his supporters that he could win the November 5 presidential election. Right is vigilant.
“I wouldn’t run again if I didn’t believe with all my heart and soul that I can do this job.” Joe Biden reassured his fans the day after a catastrophic debate that had Democrats on edge. “My argument skills have declined. “But I know the truth, right from wrong, and how to do this job,” the outgoing president said Friday at a North Carolina rally.
The outgoing president’s sluggish performance on CNN against his Republican opponent on Thursday night has reignited the debate on the Democratic presidential candidate for the November 5 election. This is a stark contrast to the energetic Biden who had addressed health concerns in the State of the Union address in March. “The greatest public service Mr. Biden could perform today would be to announce that he will not seek re-election,” the New York Times wrote in a sympathetic but criticizing editorial.
Washington— President Joe Biden is expected to discuss his re-election campaign with family at Camp David, Maryland, on Sunday after a nationally televised debate Thursday that left many Democrats worried about his ability to defeat former President Donald Trump in November, according to five sources.
Biden scheduled his trip before Thursday’s debate. He and first lady Jill Biden will join his children and grandchildren late Saturday.
Democratic leaders Barack Obama and Bill Clinton have tweeted support for Biden. Even though they outwardly support the president, senior congressional Democrats like Reps. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, and Nancy Pelosi of California have privately expressed worries about his viability, according to two sources.
One Democratic House member who thinks Biden should drop out told NBC News that three colleagues told him the same thing during Friday votes.
House leaders have not wavered publicly, and their aides rejected private reservations.
Speaker Pelosi has complete faith in President Biden and looks forward to attending his inauguration on January 20, 2025, stated spokesperson Ian Krager. “Any suggestion that she took a different path is false.”
Christie Stephenson, a spokesperson for House minority leader Jeffries, said her boss has “repeatedly made clear publicly and privately that he supports President Joe Biden and the Democratic ticket from top to bottom.”
Brianna Frias said Clyburn, who is campaigning in Wisconsin this weekend, “trusts President Joe Biden and the Biden-Harris ticket.
“Any reports alleging that the Congressman has expressed anything other than firm support of President Biden are completely untrue,” he stated.
Top Democrats agree that Biden should decide next moves. They believe only the president, in collaboration with his family, can decide whether to continue or quit his campaign early, and that pushing him will backfire.
“The decision-makers are two people — it’s the president and his wife,” one insider said. “Anyone who doesn’t understand how deeply personal and familial this decision will be isn’t knowledgeable about the situation.”
More than a dozen Democratic leaders, operatives, aides, and fundraisers were interviewed to describe a president and his party in crisis four months before an election they say will determine democracy’s fate. All talked on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive issues including whether a sitting president would resign and how he would be substituted on the ballot.
One source described Biden as humiliated, devoid of confidence, and painfully aware that the physical images of him at the debate — eyes staring into the distance, mouth agape — will live beyond his presidency, along with a performance that at times was meandering, incoherent, and hard to hear.
“It’s a mess,” commented someone.
Another insider stated Biden will only listen to one adviser.
“The only person who has ultimate influence with him is the first lady,” stated this source. “She will change the course if she decides.”
An insider clarified that the Camp David gathering was not a family reunion after the article was published.
“Any campaign discussion is expected to be informal or an afterthought,” the person said. “No one is sitting down for a formal or determinative discussion.”
Anita Dunn, one of Biden’s closest advisers, claimed Saturday on MSNBC’s “The Weekend” that Biden has not addressed pulling out of the campaign with aides and that internal deliberations have focused on moving forward.
“We had a bad debate,” Dunn added. How do we proceed? The president is mostly concerned with what’s next. Need to go do what?
Biden, his family, and his senior aides are holding these private meetings amid a reckoning for Democrats who were horrified by Biden’s appearance and his many tangents.
A Biden campaign insider said his team held a conference call Saturday with Democratic National Committee members to reassure party officials and show that his team is talking with its friends.
“We’re driving this,” the official stated.
Biden’s closest advisers have advised his team to continue conversations and discussions. One senior administration official said, “We’ll weather the storm, just like we always have.”
Sources characterize three groups of Democrats: those who will protect Biden at all costs, those who are ready to discard him, and those who are waiting to see what he does and his poll numbers in the coming days and weeks before judging him. Democratic insiders watch the third bucket.
“Democrats need to take a big breath and look at that polling, look at swing voters,” said a state Democratic Party chair. “Until I see something else, he put this coalition together, has the record, and beat Donald Trump. He’s the finest candidate to defeat Trump unless I see otherwise.”
The Biden team declined to comment, but campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon wrote a memo Saturday arguing that Biden can still win, citing the $27 million they raised between debate day and Friday evening.
O’Malley Dillon acknowledged that polling may be tough, but blamed the media: “If we do see changes in polling in the coming weeks, it will not be the first time that overblown media narratives have driven temporary dips in the polls.”
Some Democrats are considering whether to stick with an 81-year-old incumbent who could have another Thursday night between now and Election Day or go with a different candidate whose path to nomination at the party convention next month could be messy.
At his North Carolina rally on Friday, Biden told supporters, “I would not be running again if I didn’t believe with all my heart and soul I can do this job.”
The president spent most of the past 48 hours fundraising with Democrats worried about his debate performance.
At one Saturday event, he acknowledged it.
He said, “I understand the debate concern—I get it. “I had a bad night.”
One big donor close to Obama and Biden said party insiders will persuade him to leave the campaign only if he is “not viable and negatively impacting the House and Senate races.”
The wait-and-see strategy recognizes that Biden has no apparent successor and that his departure may spark a nasty intraparty conflict that could help Trump win.
He can’t be forced off his perch either. All but a few Democratic convention delegates were chosen on their promise to nominate him in August. Party insiders predict he will secure that nomination if he runs.
According to a senior Democratic official, if Biden drops out after earning the nomination, the party leadership would have more authority over choosing a replacement. Democratic National Committee members choose a successor after a candidate is nominated. Biden dominates the DNC, therefore his successor choice would be influential.
If Biden left before that, his delegates might do what he asked, but they wouldn’t be bound. A political clash at the convention may result if delegates nominated anyone.
“We need as much discipline as emotion,” added the top Democrat. It’s politically foolish for Biden to resign.”
