Incredibly ambitious, Francis Ford Coppola has proposed a science fiction film. It would seem that way, anyway.

How “Megalopolis” became one of the most talked-about films of the year is a mystery; is it a cursed project, or just another example of Francis Ford Coppola’s recent penchant for producing critically acclaimed films on shoestring budgets? Either way, it’s sure to be a highlight of the Cannes Film Festival. And a picture whose rocky release is getting the kind of scrutiny that studios working on blockbuster projects would envy.

Now, following the teaser a few days ago that gave us a sneak peek at the massive city that served as the backdrop for the action, we have the first trailer, which has already revealed certain elements about the location, characters, and visual style. Initial thoughts? From Fritz Lang’s Metropolis to Tinto Brass’ Caligula, every allusion is there in the megalomaniacal and gargantuan “Megalopolis,” which lives up to its moniker.

Unexpectedly, Coppola’s claims that the Roman Empire served as inspiration for this futuristic metropolis were borne out by the film’s events: the chariot races, toga parties, and fictional characters Cicero and Catiline really existed. The result was a city that had succumbed to decadence and frivolity. The new trailer does a lot better job of establishing the roles of the three main characters—a young architect, the mayor of the city, and his daughter.

We will only be left with a series of powerful pictures if the story and overall proposal fail to meet the project’s expectations.

The film is said to be a Roman epic taking place in a fictionalized version of the United States of America, and it will make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17th. Megalopolis is directed by Adam Driver and stars a stellar ensemble including Jon Voight, Jason Schwartzman, Aubrey Plaza, James Remar, Chloe Fineman, Laurence Fishburne, Chadwick Boseman, Grace VanderWaal, Dustin Hoffman, and D.B. Sweeney.

Production on Megalopolis allegedly cost $120 million, with a large chunk of that sum coming from the sale of Coppola’s wine empire, which he started working on in 1983. At the tail end of March, he gave a showing of the film to prospective buyers, who included Tom Rothman of Sony, Ted Sarandos of Netflix, and Donna Langley of Universal.

Despite this, the picture is still trying to get distribution, and according to multiple people who saw the screening, Megalopolis has a tough road ahead of it (The Hollywood Reporter, 2017). Although “everyone is rooting” for the director, “there is the business side of things,” as one distributor put it, and another added, “there is just no way to position this movie.”

This film has been in the works for quite some time; the director started writing the screenplay in the 1980s. It will have its competitive premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday.

The renowned director who brought you “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now” has put his own $120 million into the picture. A voiceover wonders aloud, “when does an empire die?,” at the beginning of the trailer, reflecting on the fall of great civilizations. Does it all come crashing down at once? Oh no. After a while, though, people start to doubt it, and the scene cuts to a Roman chariot racing, a cityscape, and protesters.

This Roman epic narrative takes place in a made-up version of the United States of America in the modern era, as stated in the summary. Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a brilliant artist who dreams of a brighter, more idealistic future for the city of New Rome, and Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who is steadfast in his commitment to the status quo and who perpetuates partisan warfare, special interests, and greed, are at odds over the necessity of change. The mayor’s daughter and socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel) is caught between them; her feelings for Cesar have caused her to question her allegiances and find out what she thinks people should have.

Driving is just one of many A-listers in “Megalopolis,” which also features Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman.

The producers, Fred Roos, Barry Hirsch, and Michael Bederman were joined by Coppola in writing and directing the film. Anahid Nazarian, Barrie Osborne, and Darren Demetre are the executive producers.
