German frigate in the Red Sea targets an American drone

An American drone was almost shot down by the German warship Hessen last Monday as a result of poor communication between many military missions in Yemen and the Red Sea.

The German monthly Der Spiegel reports this, stating that an American Reaper drone was unintentionally shot at by the Hessen crew.

The drone’s downfall was not only attributed to a technical malfunction in two German anti-aircraft missiles, which eventually lost power and plummeted into the ocean.

The crew of the Hessen notified their US Navy colleagues after spotting the drone on radar, but they were not informed of the Reaper drone’s mission, which was meant to be flying in the area as part of a US counterterrorism effort.

The commander of Hessen ordered the firing on the unidentified drone that was approaching the German frigate after consulting the Prosperity Guardian mission.

Following the proposal by a far-right minister to prohibit Palestinians from the West Bank from praying at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem during Ramadan, the United States has encouraged Israel to permit Muslims to pray there.

At a briefing, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated, “We continue to urge Israel to facilitate access to the Temple Mount for peaceful worshipers during Ramadan, consistent with past practice.”

According to German media on Wednesday, a US drone was almost accidentally fired down by a German military warship that was deployed to guard commercial ships in the Red Sea.

Without identifying the nation, the German Defense Ministry stated that a drone incident involving an ally nation happened on Monday.

According to Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, the Hesse frigate opened fire after attempts to identify the unidentified drone “were unsuccessful.” The frigate had arrived in the area over the weekend as part of an EU mission to assist secure international shipping from attacks by Yemen’s Houthis, who are backed by Iran.

“The case was resolved when it turned out that it wasn’t a hostile drone, which only became clear in hindsight,” Ministry spokesperson Michael Stempfle stated.

Luckily, two missiles fired at the drone missed their target and plummeted into the ocean as a result of “a technical defect,” as reported by the German magazine Der Spiegel. The publication further stated that the surveillance drone in question was a US Reaper.

Spiegel speculated that the drone may have been in the area “as part of an American anti-terror mission” unrelated to the Red Sea mission, without citing its sources. However, military officials felt the friendly-fire incident demonstrated that coordination between allies involved in various missions in the Yemen region “needs to be improved.”

“Common knowledge that American combat drones are used in the region that have nothing to do with the operation in the Red Sea,” the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung daily continued.

More good fortune came on Wednesday when the Hesse, manned by 240 German soldiers and sailors, shot down two Houthi drones in less than 15 minutes.

According to the German military, the Hesse arrived in the Red Sea over the weekend following approval of its involvement in the mission by the German parliament on Friday.

Pistorius stated that it “turned out to be correct to send the frigate at the beginning of February so that it could begin its operations… immediately after the mandate was decided.”
