After being virtually unknown for years, Harlan Coben has become a literary thriller staple. Netflix has adapted his bestsellers ‘Safe’, ‘Don’t Talk to Strangers’, and ‘Stay with Me’ almost annually with similar success. You can watch ‘I Miss You’ on the platform now.

They all have interconnected plots, secretive characters, and constant twists to keep viewers guessing. This is why ‘I Miss You’, like its predecessors, easily entered the Top 10 global English-language series. With 21,700,000 views, it quadrupled the numbers of its closest competitor, season 6 of ‘A Place to Dream’.

Here, a detective must face a past mystery she never solved: her fiancé disappeared. Years later, she discovers his face on a dating app, raising questions about whether he left their relationship and started a new life. She will discover that this mysterious disappearance is linked to a past unsolved crime that haunts her.

The house’s trademark mix of drama with tormented emotions and thriller with multiple secrets worked perfectly in this five-chapter story starring Rosalind Eleazar, who appeared in ‘Slow Horses’. The ninth Coben adaptation on Netflix is a deal that is likely to be significant for the platform given audience results.

Some find films too short, shows too long. Miniseries is the compromise. The “movies are dying” articles are the only ones dying, and the “it’s the golden age of TV” ones have stopped being news (why does one being in a golden age mean the other is failing?). A newcomer has entered the scene. Netflix and other platforms are embracing the format, which the BBC perfected. 4–8 episodes, one season. Creators can express their ideas longer, but not recycle them. Instead of 7 Homeland seasons (they made 4 after he died), viewers can see 7 stories. It’s the perfect medium, and when Netflix and the BBC keep making good ones like these 5, it will be the future.

Wild Wild Country follows an Indian hippie cult’s 1981 move to Oregon. Never heard of Wasco Country? Nobody else had then. This ghost town with a few god-fearing residents became Rajneeshpuram, the cult’s new homestead with 1,000 disciples and national media attention. Spoiler: old town residents didn’t like it.

Will there be debaucherous orgies, long-haired dropouts, preaching, and chanting? Yes. However, historical footage and interviews with contemporaries, including Ma Anand Sheela, the power-hungry secretary of the orange-clad guru, will also draw you into chemical weapons and attempted murder, one of the largest immigration fraud cases in US history, and the mysterious and not-so-mysterious ways a charismatic cult attracts and manipulates its followers. Brothers Maclain and Chapman Way’s Netflix miniseries about one of American media’s strangest moments spans six one-hour episodes and is captivating, exhaustive, and powerful.

Two convicted murderers broke out of a maximum-security prison in upstate New York in 2015 by sawing through pipes and walls. The story was so shocking it almost had to be filmed. In 2018, Showtime released the elegant and realistic drama directed by Ben Stiller in his TV directorial debut.

The smart, boss-like felon Richard Matt (Benicio del Toro) and the younger, excitable David Sweat (Paul Dano) led this unlikely feat. Patricia Arquette barely resembles Joyce ‘Tilly’ Mitchell, a married prison employee who oversaw the sewing workshop and had sexual relations with both men. She earned many awards, including a 2019 Golden Globe, for her stunning transformation and brilliant performance.

While the pacing of this sombre thriller may be too slow for some, the main cast’s stellar performances will keep you on edge. A cinematic TV adaptation of an unbelievable story, it’s a fascinating look at disenfranchised Americans’ lives.
