Iker Jiménez spreads conspiracies

Iker Jiménez is one of the most knowledgeable about the most controversial coverage of the DANA that devastated several Valencian towns on October 29. Hoaxes and misinformation have tarnished Iker Jiménez’s Mediaset programs ‘Horizonte’ and ‘Cuarto Milenio‘. El País reports that ING Direct, an advertiser, has pulled out of both programs.

The Bonaire parking lot. In the November 3 program, the Bonaire underground parking lot was falsely reported as having dozens of bodies submerged. None were found. Jiménez dramatized it on social media: “The Bonaire parking lot has many bodies. Many.” A few days later, the issue was denied, and Bonaire’s information became a symbol of DANA journalistic malpractice.

The defence. Iker Jiménez posted a video on social media that traces the events and reveals media that speculated about car park deaths before Jiménez announced it. The widely shared video has been criticized by Twitter users like Dani Domínguez for its potential issues. Several media outlets cited by Iker Jiménez speculated about deaths but did not confirm them. Jiménez has also absolved himself by blaming his sources. With a conspiratorial twist, ‘Horizonte’ suggested that deaths were concealed due to hidden interests.

Stopping advertising. El País reported that ING advertising was withdrawn due to these allegations, which go beyond a single incident. According to several media reports, the bank states that “ING advertising is pulled from a program, channel, or medium based on content or commercial strategy, not specific programs or presenters. After recent social media controversy, we changed our advertising schedule.” #AdiosIngDirect is trending on Twitter, with 40,000 pro- and anti-firm tweets.

New hoaxes. Bonaire is the best example of a program that has always been criticized for its unethical use of information, along with other programs that have been accused of hiding political statements as entertainment, rhetoric, or misinformation. Ángel Gaitán, a regular contributor, has been involved in controversies such as promoting DANA aid on Twitter and questionable donation practices. Rubén Gisbert, a Putinist conspiracy theorist, has also been involved in controversies, including impersonating Beatriz Talegón and spreading hoaxes in a nursing home.

Situation complicated. Iker Jiménez dealt with the storm well. He publicly distanced himself from Rubén Gisbert’s actions and fired him, and he justified Bonaire hoaxes with long personal videos in which he accused other media of wanting his head. Mediaset will remember ‘GH Revolution’ and ‘La Noria’, which lost advertisers after Carlota Prado’s rape and El Cuco’s mother’s interview.

History of hoaxes. Since Jiménez’s program cancellations were flagrant assaults on journalistic ethics or legality, ING Direct’s withdrawal may be an isolated case. Iker Jiménez opened ‘Horizonte’ in 2020 to distance himself from supernatural topics, and the program became one of the most controversial spreaders of pandemic hoaxes on the schedule.

It’s all lies. He had collaborators like National Police sub-inspector Alfredo Perdigueiro, who was sanctioned for spreading hoaxes. The program popularized COVID conspiracy theories like the Chinese biological weapon theory. Later in 2022, the program addressed the climate emergency and fact-checking organizations’ conspiracy theories and falsehoods. History repeats, but with worse consequences.
