For 36 seasons, ‘The Simpsons’ has sparked theories about its origins and circumstances. Some of them are insane (Homer is in a ‘Los Serrano’-style coma, Homer is still receiving Solfamidas royalties, Barney is Nelson from the future, Bart will create The Simpsons), while others are incredibly believable due to their crushing logic.

Since this weekend, a new theory has spread, which, like all of them, is more for fun and offers many proofs. This raises the always-controversial racial issue, which we shouldn’t dismiss at first: the series‘ creators have never stated the protagonists’ race beyond their yellow skin.

Elmo, the friendly monster from Sesame Street, cannot be racially coded, but his main puppeteer was black and the show was officially designed to resemble black neighborhoods like Harlem, so you never know what the creators were thinking. Naturally, we know what some viewers are thinking.

Marge’s famous bouffant may be an afro. Cocoabutterofficial, a TikTok user, first brought attention to the issue and claims that all three of the couple’s children have this hair, which grows upwards. She also calls Marge’s sisters Patty and Selma “two black, smoking aunt-sisters”—an African-American trope that reflects her dislike of Homer.

Iamthekayelle, another African-American TikToker, mentions that Marge sleeps with a hair cap, a very African-American custom (just look at the race of most of the models who advertise these products), and that she keeps the boys’ hair in the fridge after cutting it. This custom may reveal the character’s Creole roots, as Bouvier, her maiden name, suggests French-speaking Creoles in Louisiana and Mississippi.

One more official piece of evidence supports this theory. Lisa learns from a school project that her ancestor Eliza tried to help Virgil, a runaway black slave, escape in episode 13 of season 21’s ‘The Color Yellow’. They marry and have children in Canada, proving The Simpsons have a black ancestor.

This does not disprove any other theory: Springfield has African-American residents like Dr. Hibbert, who debuted in the second season. A controversy is resolved.

Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie have become the most famous TV characters in 30 years.

This is partly due to their famous yellow skin. The family’s race has never been specified, but many assume they are white because Apu and Carl show that Springfield has other ethnicities and have different skin colors.

The Simpsons may be Black, according to TikTok fans who think they have proof.

Cocoabutterofficial on TikToker suggested Marge and Homer are a ‘interracial couple’ because her long blue hair resembles an afro.

She also said Selma and Patty, Marge’s sisters, have similar hair and “bully Homer over their sister,” the Metro reports.

Someone else agreed, citing an episode where Marge sews Bart and Lisa wigs from cut hair as “African rooted” or “French or Creole.”

Additionally, Marge wearing a bonnet to bed made her “Black as hell.”

Many fans commented that the Simpson family could be Black, supporting the theory.

When one person said the characters’ yellow skin disproved this argument, another said, “You’ve never heard the term ‘(high) yellow’ in reference to a light-skinned black woman?”

A series storyline supports the theory. In season 21, episode ‘The Color Yellow’, Lisa discovers she is related to Virgil, a runaway slave, giving the Simpsons Black ancestry.
