Behind The Wild Robot, Beetlejuice, Transformers One, Devara Part 1, and Speak No Evil outgrossed Megalopolis this weekend.
IMAX and premium large-format screens contributed 41% of Megalopolis’ opening-weekend gross, with IMAX contributing $1.4 million (35% of the domestic total). 70% of the audience was male, with 38% over 35 and 32% 25–34. Exit polls showed that 61% of viewers saw the film for Coppola, 29% for Adam Driver, and 32% for entertainment. Through Saturday, AMC Lincoln Square was the movie’s top theatre, earning $84,000.
Megalopolis’ domestic debut was compared to other high-profile flops by Deadline. In 1980, Michael Cimino’s ambitious, auteur-helmed epic Heaven’s Gate grossed $3.5 million, unadjusted for inflation. Heaven’s Gate’s epic bombing ended the New Hollywood movement alone. Deadline compared Megalopolis to Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, another Hollywood passion project self-funded by Kevin Costner. Horizon grossed nearly three times Megalopolis ($11 million in June), but even that failed to produce a sequel.
