Nostalgia for Soviet Union and positive feelings

The dissolution of the Soviet Union has been referred to as “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe” of the 20th century by Vladimir Putin, the currently serving President of Russia. In a speech that he gave in 2005, Vladimir Putin stated that “tens of millions of our fellow citizens and countrymen found themselves beyond the fringes of Russian territory.”

According to a survey that was conducted by the Pew Research Centre in Russia and 17 other countries in Central and Eastern Europe between the years 2015 and 2016, the majority of Russians consider the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 to be “a bad thing.” This is despite the fact that not all Russians necessarily agree with Putin’s characterisation. Furthermore, this viewpoint is not exclusive to Russia.

As an illustration, in Russia, as well as in the former Soviet republics of Armenia and Moldova, approximately seven out of ten people or more consider the collapse of the Soviet Union to be “a bad thing.” In Belarus, on the other hand, 54 percent of people view it in a negative light.

Among the five other former Soviet states that were surveyed, adults in the three Baltic republics of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania — which were forcibly incorporated into the USSR — are among the least likely to view the breakup of the Soviet Union as a negative event. In each of these countries, three out of ten or fewer people hold this view.

The percentage of Russians who believe that the dissolution of the Soviet Union has been detrimental to their nation has decreased by ten percentage points, according to a poll conducted by the Pew Research Centre in Russia in 2017. The percentage increased from 69 percent in 2015 to 59 percent in 2017.

This shift coincides with an improvement in the Russian population’s projections regarding the economy as a whole. Despite this, the vast majority of Russians continue to maintain that the dissolution of the Soviet Union has been detrimental to their particular nation.

In general, older people in Russia and the other former Soviet republics surveyed have more positive feelings for the Soviet Union than younger people do. For instance, according to a survey conducted in 2015, 78% of Russian adults aged 35 and older consider the breakup to be a negative event, whereas only half of Russians under the age of 35 have the same sentiment. Age gaps of this kind are present in every single one of the former Soviet republics that were surveyed, with the exception of Estonia. This is the case even in countries where people who have sentimental feelings towards the Soviet Union are in the minority. For example, in Ukraine, only twenty percent of adults under the age of thirty-five consider the collapse of the Soviet Union to be a negative event, whereas forty percent of adults aged thirty-five and older hold this view.

Adults in Russia and some other nearby countries have expressed more positive views of Josef Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union for the longest period of time, than they have of Mikhail Gorbachev, who presided over the final years of the Soviet Union. This sentiment of nostalgia for the Soviet past extends to the views of Josef Stalin.

Comparatively, only 22% of adults in Russia have the same opinion about Gorbachev, while 58% of adults in Russia view Stalin’s historical role as either “very” or “mostly” positive. People in Georgia, Armenia, and Moldova, three other countries that were formerly part of the Soviet Union, similarly have a significantly more favourable opinion of Stalin than they do of Gorbachev. Georgia is the place where Stalin was born. While this is going on, Gorbachev obtains a higher rating than Stalin in the Baltic countries, as well as in the Central European countries of Poland, Hungary, Croatia, and the Czech Republic.
