There is a problem with Netflix’s upcoming major release, which is “The Irishman,” the new film from the renowned director Martin Scorsese. They are having some difficulties with it. The theatres are demanding a three-month exclusive before the film hits the small screen,

And their power is high because a theatrical release is a requirement for Oscar contention. Netflix wants to have it on its platform as soon as possible in order to satisfy its subscribers, but the theatres are demanding that it be broadcast on their platform.

Considering that Netflix has proposed a theatrical release window of 26 days, it appears that three months is an excessive amount of time. ‘The Irishman’ will be released in theatres on November 1st, and it will be made available on the platform on November 27th.

Because of this, major exhibitors like Vue (which has 2,000 screens and 228 cinemas in Europe), Picturehouse (which has 23 theatres in the United Kingdom), AMC (which has 10,000 screens in the United States), Regal, Cineplex, and Cinemark have decided not to show the film. The release has not been confirmed by anyone as of yet, and it appears that it will only be available in theatres that are independent.

Vue has confirmed in a statement that was reported by Deadline that the primary reason for the film not being shown in its theatres is that there is no three-month window, which is a standard in the industry but is not regulated. Additionally, Vue has stated that “Netflix has chosen not to give this film the full, wide-screen release it deserves.” Below, we have reproduced the entire statement in its entirety:

Netflix has decided not to give The Irishman the full big-screen release that it deserves, despite the fact that it was directed by one of the true giants of the film industry. It is our policy to only show titles that are being released with full theatrical exclusivity. This is a well-known industry practice that is responsible for the creation and shaping of cultural hits, delivers a more engaging and immersive experience for audiences, and showcases exceptional content in the manner in which it was intended to be shown and enjoyed.

Given that Vue operates in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Taiwan, and that AMC is one of the American giants, this is a significant setback for the release of “The Irishman.” The fact that something similar occurred with ‘Roma’ is evidence that this is not a novel occurrence. In the case of Spain, the film Roma was made available on Netflix as well as in a few theatres in Madrid, Barcelona, and Malaga; however, Cinesa declined to reproduce the film on their platform, citing the fact that “the distributor’s strategy does not coincide with ours.”

“The Irishman” is reminiscent of what occurred with “Roma,” which is another of the outstanding productions that took place in 2018.
Now we come back to the conflict between different business models. “The Irishman” is an example of a production that transforms the platform into an adversary for theatres, which may experience a decrease in box office revenue if the film is released simultaneously in theatres and on Netflix. For instance, in 2017, the Cannes Film Festival announced that it would not let films from Netflix or any other video-on-demand platform that had not yet been released in theatres be considered for inclusion. In point of fact, “The Irishman” will not be screened at the festival any time soon.

It is typical for a film with a budget of 160 million dollars and starring Scorsese, Robert De Niro, and Al Pacino to have a limited theatrical release, which is why The Irishman has a limited theatrical release. This puts the possibility of the film winning an Academy Award in the air. In the end, Roma was shown in 150 theatres across the United States, and it was nominated for ten Academy Awards. The film achieved widespread acclaim. The “Best Foreign Language Film” award was bestowed upon it, despite the fact that it did not take home the “Best Picture” trophy overall.
