Avatar 2 is the third-highest-grossing film ever

James Cameron signed three of the five highest-grossing films in cinema history, which will be studied in film history. A milestone reinforced by ‘Avatar 2”s number 3 finish, surpassing ‘Titanic’. Historic figures that no other Hollywood creator could access.

Thus, the first sequel to ‘Avatar’ earns $2.2433 billion, while ‘Titanic’ barely makes $2.2428 billion (it will rise thanks to its recent theatre re-release, but not as fast as ‘The Way of Water’). Avengers: Endgame (2.7994 billion) and Avatar (2.9237 billion) are ahead of ‘Titanic’ and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.

This new ranking says a lot about Cameron and his ability to keep making hits (will ‘Avatar 3’ top the box office?) but even more about Disney. Because the classic Disney of a few years ago only has one film in the Top 10 (‘The Lion King’ remake in ninth place). After purchasing Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Fox in recent years, Disney now owns all five Top 5 films.

Additionally, only Universal’s Jurassic World is not Disney in the Top 10, which is dominated by Marvel and Star Wars films. Disney has monopolised cinematic success, with 90% of the highest-grossing films in history (although Avatar and Titanic were not). Everyone will have to consider how that benefits the audience.

Like Avatar: The Way of Water, where Sigourney Weaver plays both a bright blue, immaculately conceived Na’vi teenager and her late human biologist mother, the film’s $2 billion global box office haul raises more questions than answers.

How is this movie so profitable? Why does this movie make so much?

Some say 20th Century Studios and Disney’s psyop on Americans is behind The Way of Water’s massive success.

Except for fringe theorists, the current conversation about The Way of Water feels like a hangover from 2009’s Avatar: that James Cameron made the biggest movie in history that no one remembers. It’s strange when something that makes a lot of money isn’t talked about.

But that shouldn’t be the only way to view Avatar’s financial success. When you dig deeper into what makes Avatar and its sequel work and why people are going to theatres to see it, you learn more about what we consider culturally relevant, how we’re trained to do that, and how James Cameron has, to the extent that he can, rejected that construction.

Quantifying “cultural impact” is central to the debate. More people discussing something, for better or worse, increases its impact. This calculation uses Marvel and Star Wars, owned by Disney, as prime examples. One cannot ignore the next Marvel (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) or Star Wars (The Mandalorian season 3) project unless they live in complete isolation.

Studios do a lot of reminding because they have systems to never forget what’s coming. Each project contributes to a larger story, and Marvel’s projects are often crucial.

There are movies, TV shows, one-off specials, conventions, comic books, video games, merchandise, action figures, collectibles, and more that make Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Pokémon nearly unavoidable.
