Why Sauron's Rings Of Power Season 2 Origin

During the first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Sauron’s beginnings in the Second Age were omitted, and a significant portion of his history was not revealed.

According to the explanation provided by the co-showrunner Patrick McKay, the decision to omit Sauron’s backstory from the first season was deliberate, and it was saved for the second season in order to improve the storyline.

An investigation into the dark past of Sauron and possibly an investigation into the influence of Morgoth, the first Dark Lord of Middle-earth, will be carried out in the upcoming season.

The first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power may have divulged a great deal of information regarding the history of Mordor, but it did not provide a great deal of information regarding Sauron’s personal history.

With the first season of Prime Video’s hit fantasy show picking up in the Second Age of Middle-earth, the future Dark Lord of Middle-earth spent centuries on the run after the defeat of his original master, the Dark Lord Morgoth. It was explained that although they had planned to reveal additional information about Sauron, it was ultimately decided that the story would benefit more from their decision to withhold that information until the second season. Instead, the first season of The Rings of Power started with the backstory of Galadriel, and the second season will have a similar beginning with the backstory of Sauron. Yes, there was a time when we were considering incorporating some of that content into the first season, but we ultimately decided that the storyline would benefit even more from reserving it for the second season’s premiere. With that being said, we were aware of this background information, and we have always had a strategy in place for the overall, high-level progression of characters and storylines. In terms of scene work and the kind of beat and rhythm of the piece for season 2, one of the first ideas that came to mind was that we would begin with the origin story of Sauron within the show, similar to how the first season begins with the origin story of Galadriel within the show.

Okay, it’s a little bit early. Currently, I would say that we have been working on this for a period of four years. With regard to this particular season, we began writing in the midst of the pandemic, when we were still in the process of producing season 1. A very long way.

The Rings of Power season 1 was able to shed light on Sauron’s time in corporal form before he rose to become the second Dark Lord of Middle-earth. Although the majority of audiences probably know Sauron best as the all-seeing, lidless eye from The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, the first season of The Rings of Power was able to shed light this information. But a long time before the Second Age arrived, the being that would later be known as Sauron had a blessed life as the angelic spirit Mairon. This was before the Second Age came into existence. Morgoth, the first Dark Lord of Middle-earth, would eventually have an effect on Mairon, and he would eventually fall under his influence.

Morgoth’s terrifying power dwarfed even that which would come to be wielded by his lieutenant and eventual successor by virtue of the fact that he was a fallen Valar, which are god-like beings in Tolkien’s lore. Morgoth, whose name literally translates to “Dark Enemy” or “Black Foe,” was the original source of Middle-earth’s woes. He was also the one responsible for giving form to many ancient terrors that would continue to persist right up until the time of Frodo and his quest to Mount Doom. If the audience is under the impression that Sauron is the most evil being in Middle-earth, then delving into his own dark history will quickly reveal a much more powerful and malevolent entity than even he could ever hope to become.
