The announcement was made by the FBI director and the minister of justice that they had stopped the attack planned by a Canadian who had supposedly sworn allegiance to the Islamic State.
US police declared on Friday, September 6, that a “terrorist attack” had apparently been thwarted in the US around October 7. This incident, carried out in the name of the Islamic State group (IS), targeted a “Jewish center” in New York and involved a detained Pakistani resident.
The American Department of Justice revealed in a statement that the 20-year-old “Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, aka Shazeb Jadoon, attempted to enter the United States to commit a mass shooting at a Jewish center in New York” and “was arrested on September 4 in Canada following a request from the federal prosecutor’s office” in Manhattan.
“The defendant is suspected of having planned a terrorist attack around October 7 this year with the stated objective of massacring, in the name of IS, as many Jews as possible ,” blasted Attorney General Merrick Garland.
The young Pakistani was “determined to kill Jews here in the United States, nearly a year after Hamas’s heinous attack on Israel,” according to FBI Director Christopher Wray on October 7, 2023.
Muhammad Khan, a resident of Canada, attempted to travel to New York, where “he intended to carry out a mass shooting in support of ISIS using automatic and semi-automatic weapons against a Jewish center in Brooklyn,” one of the five boroughs of the multicultural megacity of the United States, a nation with the largest number of Jews in the world after Israel, approximately six million, according to the investigation by the FBI and the federal prosecutor’s office in New York, cited in the press release.
According to the Justice Department, the young man had been under surveillance since last November because of his encrypted conversations, social media posts, and “distribution of ISIS propaganda videos and literature.”
“We are incredibly grateful to our Canadian partners for acting quickly and taking the accused into custody,” Minister Garland stated.
