We unlock 'The Lord of the Rings

JRR Tolkien’s major works are ‘The Hobbit‘, its sequel, ‘The Lord of the Rings’, and ‘The Silmarillion’, a posthumous synthesis of Middle Earth’s mythology. Just these three works have immortalized JRR Tolkien in fantasy fiction.

Because of its status as a classic, fresh bibliographical works by the author continue to appear since his 1973 death: articles inspired by his inventions, varied interpretations to his mythology… Two new Minotauro releases are ‘The worlds of JRR Tolkien’ by historical expert John Garth, who reviews the authentic places that inspired the landscapes he later invented for Middle Earth, and ‘Recipes from Tolkien’s world’, a gourmet tour inspired by his work with over 75 recipes.

These releases seem like the perfect justification to launch the second season of Laberinto de Papel, Xataka’s literary podcast with Minotauro that reviews the lives and works of renowned science fiction, horror, and fantasy authors. As always, your dedicated servant John Tones will present it, and we will welcome literature and genre specialists to chat.

This year, we added features and updated our set’s looks. Our fresh methods and guests will amaze you. First comes Eleazar Herrera, a longtime friend of the program and author of ‘The Warriors of Tale’ and the Wes Marino trilogy, who brings a unique perspective to Tolkien’s huge realm.

J. R. R. Tolkien wrote the epic fantasy classic The Lord of the Rings. The plot originated as a sequel to Tolkien’s 1937 children’s book The Hobbit and expanded into a larger work set in Middle-earth. The Lord of the Rings, published in phases between 1937 and 1949, has sold over 150 million copies.[2]

In his quest to conquer Middle-earth, Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring to rule the Rings of Power granted to Men, Dwarves, and Elves. The plot follows Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they travel Middle-earth to destroy the One Ring, starting in the Shire, a hobbit land resembling the English countryside. The Wizard Gandalf, the Men Aragorn and Boromir, the Elf Legolas, and the Dwarf Gimli help Frodo rally the Free Peoples of Middle-earth against Sauron’s troops and destroy the One Ring in Mount Doom.

Tolkien wanted the work to be one of two volumes with The Silmarillion, not a trilogy.[3][T 3] The Lord of the Rings was first published in three volumes from 29 July 1954 to 20 October 1955 under the titles The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King for economic reasons. The Silmarillion was published after the author’s death. The work has six books, two per volume, and various background appendices.[c] Following the author’s plan, these three books were published as a boxed set and then as a single volume.

The Lord of the Rings, one of the finest fantasy books ever written, shaped modern fantasy. Many reprints and 38 translations have occurred since its release.[d] Its continued popularity has led to many references in popular culture, the establishment of multiple Tolkien fan societies[5], and many books about him. Paintings, music, films, TV, video games, and board games have been influenced by it.

Radio, theater, and film versions of The Lord of the Rings have won awards. A 2003 BBC survey dubbed The Big Read voted it Britain’s favorite novel.
