Unfinished series 'The Sarah Connor Chronicles'

‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles’ entered the long list of unfinished series this spring, despite its promised death. Despite fans’ petition for its renewal, FOX canceled it due to low ratings and hefty production costs.

Although I mentioned “high production costs,” the Terminator rights made the product more pricey. FOX paid for the series and the rights to utilize James Cameron’s characters. Ultimately, such a product would have needed audience and commercial potential too large for television science fiction.

Most people I’ve talked to (or read reviews of) agree that The Sarah Connor Chronicles might have been more. The pilot picked up Sarah and John Connor shortly after Terminator 2 and then leapt forward to 2007 to fight Skynet, the artificial brain that would cause Judgement Day.

Despite its disappointment, the pilot set the series’ worst moments. Episodes often focused on the ‘Terminator of the Day’, when machines send robots to murder John Connor from the future. They only survive because to Cameron (Summer Glau), another Terminator dispatched to save them.

With episodes focused on fighting “the Terminator of today” instead than the main plot, the series lost consistency and had too much filler. First season garnered mainly positive reviews, but second season saw more criticism of the series’ direction. Additionally, the continual decline in audience counts showed that the public was bored of ‘The Sarah Connor Chronicles’.

Fox left viewers wondering if the series will continue. Strangely, as we noted at the time, ‘The Sarah Connor Chronicles’ last stretch was the greatest and left the series open to a hopeful future, more so than the second season. John Connor’s fresh jump to the future, when no one recognizes him, was a great cliffhanger.

Some days earlier, executive producer James Middleton hinted at the plot’s continuation. The new jump to the future would have released John Connor from protecting humanity. John would never have led the resistance because someone else would have done it. That’s why Derek Reese didn’t recognize him in his new period.

If we had a third season, we would have explored all the implications, but I also believe there’s a great moment when we see Allison (Summer Glau before she was a Terminator) and John’s face. That could have been dramatic too.”
Unless the series continues in comics, we’ll never know more. After 31 episodes, ‘The Sarah Connor Chronicles’ concluded without concluding anything or connecting it to the movie. Despite having the same name, the series was always considered outside the “canon” of Terminator, but I believe the eventual goal was to slot in before ‘Terminator 3’.
