America: Who is Kamala Harris's V.P. candidate Tim Walz?

Tim Walz, Kamala Harris’s running partner, is a governor from Minnesota who is skilled at American football and at ease with a gun. He fits the perfect description to entice the Midwest’s rural white middle class.

The vice presidential nominee is a critical decision in the presidential contest. Even though the “VP” has a minor function in the White House, he is crucial to the campaign since he needs to provide a balanced image to bring voters together. By this measure, Tim Walz, Kamala Harris’s running mate, meets a lot of requirements. The fact that he was the front-runner for the Democratic Party’s left wing and the unions, who were trying to stop Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro—a Jew who was thought to be too pro-Israel—was, nevertheless, not necessarily a good sign. He spent twenty years teaching geography in Mankato, a 40,000-person town in Minnesota, after being born on a forgotten plain in Nebraska. In addition, he was the high school football team’s coach, helping them go from last place to the state championship. He is an avid hunter, enjoys playing cards, and spent twenty-four years in the National Guard.

Tim Walz didn’t enter the political race until he was forty years old, in 2006, and he did so in an unwinnable rural Minnesota district that had elected just one Democrat in the previous 100 years. 53 percent of the vote went to him.

He held his district while many other rural Democrats were losing theirs throughout his twelve years in the state Congress because he voted with the most moderate members of his party and defeated other Republicans in shooting competitions.

Tim Walz began enacting more left-leaning policies after winning the 2018 election and taking control of the statehouse. After his party regained the Minnesota Assembly and Senate in 2022 and he was re-elected, he used the chance to improve abortion rights, legalize marijuana, expand background checks for gun purchases, raise funding for public schools, and implement free lunches and paid family leave.

A great running partner

However, as riots broke out in Minneapolis in 2020 after George Floyd was killed by police, Walz—a fervent supporter of law and order—opposed the City Council’s plan to replace and cut funding for the city’s police force. Rather, he suggested spending almost $500 million on hiring additional police last year.

It was not a given that Tim Walz would be on Kamala Harris’s ticket. However, “Coach Walz” presents an appealing picture as a running mate because of his upbeat personality, his remarkable appearance for a provincial, his unlikely journey from a small-time teacher to a state boss, his somewhat moderate political background, and his wealth of anecdotes about the Midwest’s feeling of community. When the real campaign, which is expected to be fierce and turbulent, starts, it will be interesting to see how gregarious, tough, nimble, and quick-witted he is.
