'Evil Dead', a witless update

When you are waiting in queue at the box office or purchasing that popcorn that is worth its weight in gold, you can hear a variety of comments that reflect the lack of information that many people who go to the theatre have. This is a factor that will probably shape the opinion that they have about what they have seen. There have been other instances in which I have seen absolutely erroneous anticipations regarding films that were selected at the eleventh hour. In the past week, I witnessed a mother who was on the verge of bringing her children, who ranged in age from five to ten years old, to watch Evil Dead (‘Evil Dead’, F. Álvarez, 2013).

The aspect of this story that is the most intriguing is the fact that the employee at the multiplex had not even bothered to learn a little bit about the programming. After spending some time looking at the panel, the woman decided against going to the theatre. It appears that she had not even noticed a poster that promised “the most terrifying experience you will ever live.” It is a vulgar PR gimmick, and it is a gigantic deception, but it leaves no space for dispute about the kind of proposal that may be anticipated. In any event, there are instances where even the fan finds himself surprised to find that what he is witnessing does not correspond with the concept that he had in mind. It is highly probable that fans of Sam Raimi’s ‘Evil Dead’ trilogy will be dissatisfied with the remake that was directed by Fede Álvarez, who is making his debut in the film industry.

It was sold as a remake, but it could easily be a sequel to the original. However, the script required the work of three professionals: Alvarez, Rodo Sayagues, and Diablo Cody, who are not credited for their contributions. The story of “Evil Dead” is not complicated at all, especially considering that it is an update of “The Evil Dead” (Sam Raimi, 1981). After watching the movie, I have a feeling that Cody’s task was to add more layers of complexity to the drama that connects the brothers. This is the only component that is utilised in the process of developing characters for a certain organisation. An fascinating concept, but the outcome is not even close to being satisfactory. First and foremost, since the gravity of the situation does not correspond with the remainder of the proposal.

The camera descends from the sky and takes us to the old and lonely cabin where everything is going to take place. This comes after an irregular prologue that is devoid of emotion but is nicely concluded. The prologue previews the danger that the heroes are going to encounter. Five handsome boys, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Elizabeth Blackmore, Lou Taylor Pucci, and Jane Levy, the protagonist of the comedic series ‘Suburgatory’ (2011-2013), get together for the first time in a number of years to spend a few days together. The excuse that they use is that one of the girls wants to overcome her addiction to drugs. When the festival of terror that was sparked by the reckless reading of a mysterious book that was discovered in the basement of the house begins to break out, this problem will serve as the basis for the others to mistrust her.

The scriptwriters of ‘Evil Dead’ have shown a lack of concern for rationalising the actions made by the characters they have created, who are driven into agony and death in an irrational manner. This lack of concern is visible almost from the beginning of the show.

It is a clumsiness that regrettably has become nearly a constant in the genre, probably due to the low demand of the audience – look out for the amount of installments of uninteresting series such as ‘Saw’ or ‘Paranormal Activity’-. It is common knowledge that the scares and the gore are the most noteworthy aspects of these films; nonetheless, this does not mean that there should not be a minimum of attention and ingenuity in the presentation of a story and characters that are credible. In contrast, the more credible something is, the more terrifying it is.

If they had chosen to take a naughty and comedic approach, similar to what Raimi did with the sequels to “Evil Dead,” in which he served as producer alongside Bruce Campbell, then all of this would have been forgiven. Alvarez provides a horror narrative that is too conventional, which takes long to get going and when it does, it does not create interest, trying to surprise with banal concepts.

There are winks, and certain scenes appear to have been recorded by the director of the reivindicable “Drag Me to Hell” (2009). However, Alvarez’s story makes an attempt to surprise with ideas that are already well known. Without a shadow of a doubt, the most enjoyable aspects of the movie are the few instances of humour that are utilised effectively, such as “My face hurts…”, as well as the few instances of really violent and unsettling visuals.

The most significant error that this “Evil Dead” makes is that it takes a silly story about demonic possessed and easy blood too seriously. However, there is not much that is worth noticing in this installment. If you have seen the trailer, you could say that you have already learnt about practically all of the significant scenes that will occur in the movie. Be patient and wait for some time for it to be forgotten, and don’t have too high of expectations.
