The end of the world is close... in these volumes

In this article, we discuss a couple of recent books that are centered around the topic of the apocalypse and how to cope with it.

Things are coming to an end. That is, at least, what the most recent works of science fiction literature have to say on the subject. In today’s episode of “Laberinto de papel,” the fantasy literature podcast that we produce at Xataka in collaboration with Minotauro and Planeta Cómic, we provide some current and extraordinary examples of this theme. It is a concept that the genre insists on repeatedly.

To accomplish this, we have the assistance of a frequent visitor to our establishment, Meren, who is a journalist and an expert in the field of fantasy literature. Together, we discuss these two propositions: on the one hand, the two volumes of ‘Outpost,’ which is an apocalyptic story written by Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the well-known ‘Metro’ series. A very happy surprise, the lightning-fast ‘Red Mist’ by AJ Ryan, about which it is best to know as little as possible. And on the other hand, a very pleasant surprise.

As we watch ‘Outpost’ and its sequel, we are taken to a future Russia in which a group of individuals reside in a military post on the eastern frontier. From this vantage point, they keep an eye on a bridge that spans the poisoned Volga River. Crossing the bridge is something that no one has dared to do for decades, but a young man who hardly recalls the world before the calamity decides to do in order to impress a friend. He is the first person in his life to do this. The backdrop of this duology shifts in the second volume, but the gloomy and dreary image of our future remains the same. This is just one of the many stories that are told in this duology.

It opens with a guy waking up on a ship at sea with no memory of who he is or where he is. The tone and style of “Red Fog” are radically different from one another. It is frantic and mysterious, full of secrets and narrative twists, and it begins with the man doing so. Six additional individuals, each with their own set of skills, all of whom are amnesic, and all of whom are armed, are with him. It will be necessary for them to comply with commands that are communicated to them via radio, discover who they are, and endure a mysterious fog that appears to have eradicated all other forms of civilization.

In the event that the world is coming to an end, I just hope that there is a charming little robot with wide eyes who enjoys watching old movies and who has a cockroach as his best friend. This robot would keep us company and provide humanity with some hope for life after the apocalypse. For your own protection, however, it would be beneficial to familiarize yourself with some fantastic and, at times, unsettling novels that deal with the end of the world. In this collection of novels, the author explores the numerous possibilities that exist in post-apocalyptic life, whether the protagonist is attempting to live in a strange new place after life as we know it has come to an end or is preparing for an oncoming terrible catastrophe.

Agnes adores her hometown of Red Creek, with all of its dusty roads, sunshine, and peaceful mornings. She also adores God. She devotes her undivided attention to her younger siblings and abides by the stringent laws that are in place in that community. The fact that Red Creek is a cult that is run by a psychopath who identifies himself as a prophet is something that she is unfamiliar with.

After that, Agnes comes into contact with Danny, a youngster from the Outsider community, and she starts to doubt what constitutes and does not constitute a sin. Ezekiel, her younger brother, will perish if she does not provide him with the insulin that she trades for once a month, despite the fact that medicine is believed to be illegal. Given that she rescued him, is she a sinner? Is it a sinful act for her sister, Beth, to have dreams about the world that exists beyond Red Creek?

Agnes comes to the realization that she has no choice except to flee with Ezekiel and abandon everyone else, even Beth, as the Prophet becomes increasingly violent. On the other hand, the outside is still not safe: The velocity at which a viral epidemic is spreading throughout the population is very alarming. As Agnes continues to explore the world, a weird link between her and the Virus begins to develop. But in a world where faith, miracles, and brutality have been indistinguishable for a very long time, will Agnes be able to make a decision between rescuing her family and saving the world?

Within the flooded Gulf Coast region of the United States, oil is limited, but loyalty is even more scarce. The crews of young people are dismantling grounded oil tankers in order to salvage the parts they contain. Nailer, a young man, is employed by the light crew and is responsible for searching for copper wiring in order to fulfill his quota and, with any luck, survive to see another day. However, when Nailer finds an elegant clipper ship that has been beached during a recent hurricane, he is faced with the most significant decision of his life: he must either steal the ship for all of its worth or save the only survivor of the ship, a beautiful and affluent girl who has the potential to lead him to a better life….

In this compelling novel, Hugo and Nebula Award winner Paolo Bacigalupi provides a fast-paced adventure that takes place in the vivid and raw, uncertain future of his companion novels, The Drowned Cities and Tool of War. They are both set in the same universe.
