Frontiers of Pandora solves the movie-game curse.

James Cameron appeared at UbiSoft Forward (remotely) to support the trailer for this interactive spin-off of his films, which looks better than most film-to-video game adaptations and goes further than lazy playable versions. This is pure spin-off.

Finally, the mechanics are typical of an FPS, but there are indications of an open world and role-playing game: you must collect food, manufacture weapons, set your heroine’s skill tree, and plan attacks. It may be a sandbox environment, but everything suggests a mixed recipe.

In ‘Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora‘, we control a Na’vi native who is kidnapped by human soldiers as a child and brainwashed to fight her own people. Her world will reveal itself and she will join the struggle against humans fifteen years later, after a long coma.

‘Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora’ will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on December 7. To accompany the trailer, UbiSoft has created a lengthy commentary video that shows how hard they worked to capture the Pandora ecosystem. A delightful surprise that hints it may look at James Cameron’s flicks.

In 2009, James Cameron gave one of the craziest E3 moments when he talked for what seemed like forever about his Avatar-themed game at the Ubisoft press conference without presenting anything other than a logo. The legendary director had envisioned Avatar for decades, but technology seemed unsuitable.

The optimum time to launch a tie-in game was when the first movie was coming out. The picture about blue cat-like humans that lived in a breathtakingly beautiful environment broke box office records worldwide in December, becoming a multi-billion dollar franchise that Fox wanted to profit from forever.

However, Ubisoft’s first official movie franchise videogame was disappointing. We finally received a respectable, and shockingly amazing, game like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora after fourteen years.

Developed by Ubisoft-owned studios like Massive Entertainment and Fox’s 20th Century Games, it’s one of the most visually impressive licensed games, and while its gameplay is mostly derivative of Far Cry, it’s one of the better.

You play as a human-raised na’vi on a research team led by the RDA (Resources Development Administration), the entity that caused much of the mayhem in the movies and Pandora’s major adversary. After escaping captivity and joining the resistance, you gain unique skills and must defeat those who abuse your home planet as a member of a long-lost influential na’vi tribe.

Frontiers of Pandora takes place both before and after the original film, with Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully leading the resistance. You learn about his exploits as you play. No big Hollywood names other than Cameron’s will bog things down with poor performances. Instead, you meet many new individuals who serve as task givers and crafters at various stations and stores.

The game’s story is surprisingly fascinating, even though none of the minor characters stand out. I’m not a fan of the source material, thus Frontiers of Pandora started off confusing me with a lot of names and acronyms. However, as you explore the planet and escape to freedom, it opens up and provides lore incentives to keep you going in this open-world adventure.

Pandora is beautiful, with lush, colorful places to jump. Given its uniqueness, I was captivated by the number of things to scan, learn about, and climb. As a “Far Cry like” game, Frontiers of Pandora offers lots to strive for, especially because you play as a na’vi instead of a human. You are twice as tall as any grunt and stronger from the start, allowing you to throw any stupid person in your path.
