9/11: Pentagon cancels Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's ('mastermind') plea deal

A retreat following the declaration of a deal that startled some victims’ families and provoked harsh criticism within the Republican community.

The United States of America Two days after this hotly fought ruling that would have saved him the death penalty, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Friday, August 2, rejected the plea deal arranged for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, considered the “mastermind” of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

After Osama Bin Laden, the most despised person connected to the September 11 attacks, surprised many relatives of the almost 3,000 dead and provoked harsh criticism in the Republican camp, an agreement was made public on Wednesday for the man who is still alive.

The arrangement that would have saved Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi from the death penalty also applies to the two co-defendants who are currently being held at the US military base in Guantanamo.

“I have decided, given the importance of the decision to enter into pre-trial plea agreements with the accused (…), that the responsibility for such a decision should fall to me ,” the minister wrote in a brief memo.

The purchases were deemed “unconscionable” by House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, a Republican, in a letter to the secretary.

While Senator JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate in the November election, stated at a rally that the US “needs a president who kills terrorists, not negotiates with them,” House Speaker Mike Johnson termed them “a slap in the face” to the families of the dead.

The Defense Secretary further stated in his memo that he was withdrawing Susan K. Escallier’s authority over the three cases he was taking up, as she was the Defense Department’s senior official for military commissions.

“With immediate effect, in the exercise of my authority, I hereby revoke the three negotiated sentence agreements signed on Wednesday,” it read.

According to American media, the arrangement pertaining to him notably permitted Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to escape a trial in which he would have been sentenced to death in exchange for a life term in prison.

“KSM” (short for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed) braggingly told investigators he had planned and orchestrated the bloodiest strikes in history. He has been a prisoner at Guantanamo’s extremely secure facility for eighteen years.

The majority of people are familiar with the 59-year-old from the image of him that was shot that evening in 2003, when he was wearing white pajamas and had messy hair and a bushy moustache.

He is a Pakistani who was reared in Kuwait and is reported to have proposed the notion of plane crashes to Osama bin Laden, the head of al-Qaeda, in 1996.

The official 9/11 investigation described him as a “terrorist entrepreneur,” with the intent and plans for attacks but lacking the resources and structure to execute them, despite the fact that he did not initially join al-Qaeda.

The three men are charged with both terrorism and the killing of about 3,000 people during the attacks in New York and Washington, which were among the most horrific moments in American history.

The attempts to try them were stalled over whether the evidence against them was corrupted by the torture they endured in covert CIA prisons, thus they were never tried.

Attorneys for the detainees revealed in March 2022 that talks were in progress for a potential plea agreement as opposed to a trial before the military court in Guantanamo.

The defendants specifically requested a guarantee that they would stay in solitary confinement at Guantanamo instead of being moved to a federal prison on the American continent.
