37 graphic novels from the previous 11 years

Comics are definitely growing in bookstores and big stores. Film and TV adaptations have boosted graphic novels, and the publishing sector wants a good library. Of course, some don’t know where to start while others stopped reading comics long ago. Today we’ve gathered 33 graphic novels from the last decade to (re)hook you on comics.

I’ll start with the key criteria I used, namely that they were works I liked: They must have been published in Spain in volumes since 2010. They must be standalone stories or a prelude to a series. Ready? Let’s begin:

Recently, ‘Saga‘ has become one of the most popular and acclaimed science fiction comics in the US. Vaughan, known for ‘Y. The last man’, and Fiona Staples write a love and war narrative about two opposing sides (and planets) having a daughter. This will alert the High Command, who will not tolerate disloyalty. Despite being light, this comic has great concepts and engaging characters. Blanco Papel review. Cómic Planet

Spain-based horror mangaka Junji Ito contributes the first manga to this list. Ito uses a weird concept in which four young people meet through a forum to commit themselves in a forest to discuss doppelgangers, greed, and ambition in a story that becomes much more gruesome and wonderful. Despite the title, Sean Murphy’s thriller concentrates around a reality TV show that retransmits the life of a clone of Jesus of Nazareth from conception to a disaster-stricken future. A cartoon about faith, reason, and science with outstanding action and graphics. Fancueva (ECC Ediciones) review.

‘Batman and Robin’ is one of my favorite Batman series this century. Morrison’s Batman’s middle act features Dick Grayson as Gotham’s protector after his apparent death and Damian Wayne as Robin. A lot of outrageous action in the spirit of the Golden and Silver Ages, with three-issue mini-arcs that make you desire the next volume. Don’t be afraid that it’s the middle of the stage—it’s an easy entry point. Special in Podcast 9. (ECC.)

You all know Jim Henson from ‘The Muppets’ and others. Experimental filmmaker was a lesser-known role. Ramón K. Pérez turned a lost script into a graphic novel. ‘Cuento de Arena’ relates the story of a man pursued by a community in a bizarre, nearly quiet, and exceptional story. Blanco Papel review. (Norma.)

Ales Kot’s ‘Zero’ was a 2014 discovery for me. A child-trained spy remembers how he was recruited and some of his most dangerous missions when his assassin visits him. This first volume (published by ECC Ediciones) features a different artist for each chapter, which enhances the storytelling style but can hinder a superb espionage fiction. O’Malley is inspired by maturity. In his latest film, ‘Seconds’, a restaurant partner is overwhelmed by her job and personal troubles and chooses to create another restaurant. However, one night she realizes she can fix something she regrets. The ‘Scott Pilgrim’ creator delivers a stunning comic about the consequences of actions (including “erased” ones). Review in Papel en Blanco (Random House).

Although outstanding, Asterios‘ plans have never been built. After his house burns down, he chooses to start over with a meaningful life. Mazzuchelli was captivated by this graphic novel, which is a master class in comics. Review in Fancueva. (Salamandra.)

Spanish comics history should be revisited occasionally. In 2010, Paco Roca published ‘El invierno del dibujante’ (The Winter of the Cartoonist), a story about a group of cartoonists that founded ‘Tío Vivo’ magazine to challenge Editorial Bruguera’s oppressive tactics. Cifré, Escobar, Vázquez, and Ibáñez are among the artists featured in this exceptional story. Fancueva (Astiberri) review.
